"Researchers say discovery of stains from summertime flows down cliffs and crater walls increases chance of finding life on red planet"

Liquid water runs down canyons and crater walls over the summer months on Mars, according to researchers who say the discovery raises the chances of being home to some form of life.

The trickles leave long, dark stains on the Martian terrain that can reach hundreds of metres downhill in the warmer months, before they dry up in the autumn as surface temperatures drop.

Images taken from the Mars orbit show cliffs, and the steep walls of valleys and craters, streaked with summertime flows that in the most active spots combine to form intricate fan-like patterns.

Scientists are unsure where the water comes from, but it may rise up from underground ice or salty aquifers, or condense out of the thin Martian atmosphere.

?There is liquid water today on the surface of Mars,? Michael Meyer, the lead scientist on Nasa?s Mars exploration programme, told the Guardian. ?Because of this, we suspect that it is at least possible to have a habitable environment today.?

The water flows could point Nasa and other space agencies towards the most promising sites to find life on Mars, and to landing spots for future human missions where water can be collected from a natural supply.

?Mars is not the dry, arid planet that we thought of in the past,? said Nasa?s Jim Green. ?Liquid water has been found on Mars.?

This is one of the drawbacks of IM, you become too immersed in everything, and forget to pay attention to awesome news like this!
Personally I was very happy to hear about this, hopefully it wish push NASA to send people there sooner.

If the water dries up in autumn then how would life be sustainable year round?

Okay, liquid water means that at least somewhere, part of the year on the planet, the temperature is above 32 degrees F/0 degrees C. My understanding prior to this was that the warmest place on Mars, during the summer was only 2 degrees F, making liquid water impossible outside of it being in a volcanic area. Anybody got a better answer on this issue?

In fact what they found was a brine of water and perchlorate salts.
These salts in the water would lower the freezing temperature considerably, making it possible for the water to be in liquid form even in subzero temperatures.

It's not even specific to the temperature. The atmosphere's so thin that liquid water would boil off before it freezes but the perchlorates are inhibiting both. The possibility of microbes is kind of exciting though.

There have been experts saying that Mars has water for over 10 years. NASA is just trying to stay relevant or perhaps they have been paid to help promote a new movie[1] coming out?

One of the premises of The Martian is that there was no water on Mars, homie.

If NASA's funds gets a few more cuts, they'll start getting pictures of Predators drinking Mojito's on the shores of the new-found rivers.
