Hey everyone! I've just has the Information Retrieval class, and we've just finish a project about the Search Engine. I came across a video today about the Zipf's Law and the Pareto principle. If you guys don't know what is it? Look it up. Those principle are like the very simple rules but they control the world. Control humans life. I can't believe that we're the most complicated species lives on earth. We...controls this world. We even use the mother nature to provide food for us, we are the species at the top of the food chain, we're smart. And our life, our behaviors, our languages are super complicated, unpredictable. But everything still live under that rule. the zipf's law or even the Pareto principle. So maybe God put those rules on us right? Or are we the real species holding the power in our hands or there're some higher power using us like some white mouse, putting rules on us that we don't even realize. Are we really free? Are we even living right now?

Watch this video guys.

I was fully prepared to come up with a sarcastic comment about this post, but this video is really interesting.

" Are we really free? Are we even living right now? "

Let us assume you are not free.
Let us assume you are not "living" (whatever that means in your opinion)

Would that change anything?

How would knowing the answers to those questions enrich your life as is?

We are curious cats, aren't we. But we rarely think about the consequences of
our curiosity. The thrill is just too powerful.

Btw watched the video, didn't comment on it because I don't have anything intelligent to add.
Only speculation.

Absolutely. The thrill is just too powerful. But to even know about that we're just some insect, living in a matrix, a maze that was setup by some higher power, everything you do, every secrets you're holding, your private life, your languages, every person that you know in your life, they're living the life like it was their own life, they think they control it. A random sentence they would say ( who is gonna control that from me ), some random problems they would get in, even their future, every random things they would love to do in their entire life, their behaviors, their though, all of that, all of that is just in the hand of some thing higher that we don't know.
If you didn't come to this post, if i did not post this post, you did not watch that video. And maybe for the rest of your life, you won't even know you're manipulated, your life is being watched, being control, how scary is that?
.
.
You accept your life right now, even though i told you that maybe you're living under some rules that you don't even realize, you're being controlled by it, controlled by some higher power who made those rules.
.
.
If you aware it, just if you actually aware of that maybe you can take back some freedom.
And the Pareto principle doesn't enrich your life? It said that every thing you did was accomplished with just 20% of effort. Imagine you took 10 hours in learning some thing new, but actually there're only 2 hours you was learning. The rest was wasted. Knowing that doesn't enrich your life? Aware of that knowledge doesn't change the way you learn something? Apply that rule to your life, what would it be, what would change?
Are you really happy right now?
What if i say that 80% of your happiness comes from 20% of the people you have a relationship with ( your parent, sister, homies v.v.v.) Just 20% of them actually make you happy, or just 20% of all the thing that you usually do make 80% of the time you really feel alive but not just exist. Would those things change your life, change the way you look at the world?
.
.
These are just 2 rules, what else are more crazier than this, maybe there's a rule was put on your mind that if you dont experience enough things, felt enough dangerous you won't believe what people said. Even i told you that pareto rule, you don't want to use it to your life, you said it didn't enrich your life.
.
.
I love you guys so that i shared these things for you. Use the Pareto principle, read about "how can i apply pareto principle in learning", "how can i be happier with pareto principle". That might change your life man.

Free will is a myth; man was created to serve God the Father - our choice is to do His will or to choose our own. If we choose our own, we are in rebellion and bound to the fate of this world. You can see manifestations of this simple truth when you come to understand the "halting problem" in computer science. In a nutshell, the "halting problem" shows that no computer (regardless of the type, even if it is completely imaginary) can always produce the correct output for a given input. The halting problem dispels lies like "quantum computing" and "sentient machines / AI".

Price's Law is very intriguing as well and is similar to the Pareto Principle; it's just expressed a little different mathematically.

What Price's Law says is that 50% of the work/results/sales/etc. is produced by the square root of the number of people/entities in the hierarchy.

So if you have 100 websites that did $1m in revenue this year:

50% of the total revenue ($500,000) was generated by only 10 of the websites (the square root of 100).

So 10 sites = 50% of the revenue and 90 sites combine to make up the other 50%.

But it gets even more interesting (and confusing to write it out, but I will try).

You don't just take the square root once and it ends there. You have to keep breaking it down until you can't go any further.

So using the same example of the 100 websites doing $1m in revenue:

We already established that 50% ($500,000) is generated by 10 of the sites (square root of 100). However, now of those 10 sites that made $500,000, we have to take the square root of that 10 to get 50% of the $500,000. Meaning $250,000 out of that $500,000 was earned by only 3 of the sites (3 is roughly the square root of 10).

At this point, we've shown that out of our 100 total websites, a mere 3 of them generated $250,000 out of our $1m total; this means 97 of them combine to make the remaining $750,000 (however, it's not like it's split evenly amongst those 97 - everything is still concentrated within a small number of the total websites).

And we can do it again...

Of the 3 sites that earned $250,000 total, half of that was made by the square root of 3, which shows that only 1-2 of the 100 sites brought in $125,000 total and the rest is spread out over the remaining 98-99 sites.

Jordan Peterson talks about both Pareto and Price's Law a lot. It's extremely captivating when you realize that these equations can be applied to literally almost every scenario and area of industry in life (50% of the total book sales on Amazon this year was brought in by the square root of the number of authors who wrote books during the same time period).

Here's a video of him explaining it:

And then here's a written article that breaks it down further: https://dariusforoux.com/prices-law/

Lastly, if you really pay attention to the numbers, you'll see that what you calculate using Price's Law comes out to be very close to the 80-20 rule of Pareto's Principle.

I'm definitely gonna read it. This "halting problem" looks interesting.

https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=gotdamn it. That's crazy man. I'm looking it up now. See, this world is mystery man. And even the pareto principle was actually not a rule, it's an observation. Maybe that mystery pareto principle was created by the living hatbits, the way human evolved, maybe we created those rules, or did we?
But thanks for your reply, i'm checking it out.

Lol. Title sounds like "I'm 14 and this is deep" type of post but I'll give the video a try.
Sound like you have never try to figure out about your life, your subsistence. You're having a 9-5 job right? Sound like you've never wonder about it.

My understanding is that these particular rules/principles/laws or whatever we want to call them are fundamental laws of the way our society operates; no different than the equations that govern gravity, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, and the rest of the universe.

Mathematics and the equations we derive from it may be a human construct insofar as we need to use our own understanding of words and numbers to elucidate the proofs from these equations, but what the numbers themselves describe is the fundamental fabric of our universe. We wouldn't be able to explain or understand the universe without these numbers.

The Pareto Principle and Price's Law are simply more observations about the way certain phenomena play out in real life. Even if nobody ever discovered the equations or gave these rules a name, they would still be operating in the background of our lives completely independent of our conscious awareness of them. That's what makes them so captivating and impressive to me.

The fact that no matter what industry you look at, 80% of the results come from 20% of the work/people; or that we can simply take the square root of the amount of people in an organization, and that number is what produces 50% of the output. And BOTH of these equations end up working out to almost identical numbers despite arriving there via different mathematics. It's incredibly bewildering and stimulating to the mind when you think deeply about it.

Rather busy to comment on everything but let me just comment on a few points:

"What if i say that 80% of your happiness comes from 20% of the people you have a relationship with ( your parent, sister, homies v.v.v.) Just 20% of them actually make you happy, or just 20% of all the thing that you usually do make 80% of the time you really feel alive but not just exist. Would those things change your life, change the way you look at the world?"

I don't know about others, but my happiness does not derive or depend on others to start with (in general). That doesn't mean that I do not need
a family or a core group of people (very few) to enrich my life and hopefully enrich theirs.
Most of what or how we feel should never be someone else's responsibility, that is a dangerous position you are putting others in.
I like personal accountability.

"(...) Apply that rule to your life, what would it be, what would change?
Are you really happy right now?"

Right now? Yes. Tomorrow? Maybe. I don't expect to be happy every day and that is okay.
I would say compared to most people, we are blessed over here.

"You accept your life right now, even though i told you that maybe you're living under some rules that you don't even realize, you're being controlled by it, controlled by some higher power who made those rules."

I don't shy away from natural law, why would I shy away from "spiritual law"? if you want to give it a name.
More concerned about humans controlling my life than the creator. That really sucks, specially because
most of them are greedy, ugly and dumber than most of us.
You are being controlled by so many other things that are toxic, destructive and does not have your best
interests in mind and all of them come from humans. God is harmless, compared to that.
