Highly depends.
There is no general answer.
Niches vary so much, it is simply impossible to give you an answer to your question.
It can take 10x PBNs, maybe 20x, heck... maybe even 100x. Maybe the SERPs are manually monitored in your niche. Maybe the competition has access to high-end digital PR sources.
You see, there are no general answers in SEO without knowing the exact niche (and thus competition), the targeted keywords and the main site.
And even then it's just an anticipation of how the algo responds to the link - it's always an educated, correlated (but not causal) guess.
A good start would be 10x mid-tier expired domains (RD50+ with 50%+ contextual links from DR30+ sites).
On Vultr you'd have to create 7 individual droplets. One droplet per PBN domain.
Vultr will assign a unique IP automatically to each droplet after creation.#
You can verify that only your site is hosted on the IP by using https://viewdns.info/reverseip/
It should show ZERO results right after droplet creation. If there are other sites hosted on the IP, destroy the droplet and create a new one from a diff. datacenter.

I'm looking at digitalocean's service. It seems their prices are excellent.
What type of configuration of WordPress Droplet for PBN should I choose?

We are using Digital Ocean, Vultr and Linode on most of our PBNs. We have some on Atlantic which is good too, but pricier.
The first three are more than enough to host hundreds of PBNs.
Regarding setup:
#1 If you want to use Digital Ocean's One-Click-Apps
If you want to use DigitalOceans's one-click-apps, you should watch the video I linked in OP.
#2 If you want to use Runcloud.io + Digital Ocean
Follow this video (or this guide https://blog.runcloud.io/digitalocean-marketplace/)
Once the server is live and added to runcloud, you can install wordpress + ssl following this: https://blog.runcloud.io/install-wordpress-runcloud/#create-a-web-application
Plan: The cheapest droplets are more than enough for one PBN ($5.00 / mo)

Hi, thanks for this. I'm currently building 6 PBNs for different niches my clients are in. The way I've gone about building them has been more or less consistent with what you've written up, except for the bit about Cloudflare - - all my PBNs use cloudflare (albeit on different cloudflare accounts and different nameservers and IPs). Could you elaborate a little more on why you recommend against using Cloudflare to obfuscate a site's footprint?

One droplet should only host one PBN site.
While it is possible to host more than one PBn on a single droplet, it would defeat the purpose of footprint free hosting.
It's completely redundant if you utitlize proper cloud hosting (i.e. one droplet = one PBN site and using no custom nameservers).

thank you so much @janist. Great refresher as I had always interest in building a PBN but never had enough time for maintaining those and keeping those fresh as I sadly don't focus enough on my SEO and more on other acquisition channels.
You definitely positioned yourself as one of the experts here, I didn't know you were part of the seolutions.biz team!
A question:
Do you still see today with your pbns that a homepage link to money site is more powerful than a link from a different page on the same site? I know it was true before but I just discussed this subject today with an SEO and he said it is not the case anymore?
Would like your expert insights if you have a moment

Re. your question:
Typically, yes, as most of the time, the homepage will have the majority of good links pointed at it.
However, sometimes an inner page really carries the majority of links and in that case you want to link out from that exact page.
In this specific scenario you can do the following:
Re-create the inner page, with the exact URL structure and some related fresh content, as a post on your expired domain. Within the fresh content on that inner page add internal links to your homepage as well as one external link to your money site with your anchor of choice.
Then sticky the post in full on the homepage (for example in a 'recent articles' section).
This will link to the inner page from the homepage and vice versa.
Best out of both worlds.
Simple, but works out fine.
Alternatives: Redirect the inner page to the homepage (via .htaccess) to the homepage. Not ideal, but we highly prefer internal links instead of internal redirects.
