The TRUTH About Popular SEO Blogs & Online Resources! We all know BHW is one of the best sources of information.. but we also know that you have to read info from multiple sources if you are serious about SEO. It is changing almost daily and to stay ahead of the game I read almost every site there is. People all have their favorites and the sites they visit daily. I thought it would be fun to give you my view on some of the most popular ones. This will be a lot more of a light hearted post than what I usually post.. but I think you'll enjoy it and get some benefit from it. I'll tell you the good as well as the bad.. no bullshit and no promotional crap.. if you want someone to tell you how it really is then read on. This is the TRUTH about the "other" SEO news and information sources.. MOZ (https://moz.com/blog) Ahhh.. Goold old Moz.. the land of complete nonsense. Why does Moz exist? TO SELL $99/month subscriptions to their software. THAT IS ALL. People in the SEO world think Moz is something more than it really is. DA? Domain Authority? This is their made up algo.. and if you have half a brain you will realize that it is completely worthless. It exists to get people hooked on Moz. After Google's page rank died out (it still exists.. it just isn't public) Moz jumped all over it and pushed DA down the throats of SEO clowns everywhere. People talk about DA now like they talked about PR back in 2008. I hate Moz.. but their blog can be the source of some good case studies and testing. In a seas of clueless SEO clowns there are a few smart blokes that post some decent stuff. It's worth checking out once a week.. you might only get 1 or 2 good blog posts a week so don't waste your time checking back in every day. SEARCH ENGINE JOURNAL (http://www.searchenginejournal.com) SEJ.. another land of the SEO clown. This blog used to be really good but now they let articles get posted by anyone. I can't remember the last time I read a good post here. They used to have really in depth posts but that has been replaced by the same recycled crap from years ago. If you want to constantly read blog posts about the same "top 20" WordPress plugins then read this blog. But if you want real good SEO info skip it. Yes SEJ we know.. link patrol is your plugin.. (they push it in nearly every post) and you have your summits with the SEO clown crew talking about worthless crap. It's funny because now SEK tries to post "breaking news" and it's always after other sites. They must have a full time person to steal news from other sites. This site royally sucks. I try to find good in everything.. but this blog is worthless. The contributors are clueless and the site is just throwing crap up. Anyone else notice how the quality sucks more than ever over there? SEARCH ENGINE LAND (http://searchengineland.com) After bashing the piss out of SEJ we come to Search Engine Land. This site is actually one of my favorite SEO blogs. Why? Because they tend to post articles from SEOs at large corporations.. for example the head of SEO at Disney.. and companies like that. Not SEO clowns doing SEO in mommys basement. These people usually have good insight and talk about real topics.. and they don't post crap like SEJ's famous "top 20 WordPress plugins" rehashed crap. This is also the best place for breaking news. When I am tracking Google penalties I keep Search Engine Land loaded in a browser and refresh. They are one of the only outlets that actually gets replies directly from Google about updates and penalties. I check this blog out about 3 times a day. Sometimes there will be the standard "content is king" SEO industry bullshit posts.. but you can usually get some good stuff here.. and like I mentioned when a penalty is in progress this is the best info source. MARKETING LAND (http://marketingland.com) This is also a good blog.. and no wonder.. it is by the same people that do Search Engine Land.. this is just more of an overall marketing blog and again they get their content from people that are working in the corporate world for large companies.. not the SEO circle jerk crew. If you are into just SEO then stick to Search Engine Land.. but if you want to dive into all marketing topics I would suggest checking it out once a week and skim it for anything that might interest you. It's good.. so I wanted to include it. See.. I'm not always a dick.. unless we are talking about Search Engine Journal.. that blog sucks balls SEARCH ENGINE WATCH (http://searchenginewatch.com) This is a blog that exists to sell all the shit CLickZ sells.. training, etc. They try to rope in the corporate crowd here and then sell them over priced conferences and training. That is where the big money is.. fuck SEO.. sell training and hyped up conferences This blog likes you to think they have really good info but this place reeks of 2005. The posts are rehashed crap and they are such low quality.. look at the authors.. most are over 50 years old.. they don't know what they are talking about. The blog is a complete joke. Unless you want to overpay for corporate training or go to a worthless conference that mimics a senior citizen retreat then stay away from this POS! QUICK SPROUT (http://www.quicksprout.com/blog/) Neil Patel.. the guru machine.. he feeds off noobs and that is how me makes a good portion of his money. He claims to be a big time consultant.. but I think that is just bullshit to impress the noob sheeple.. then he sells them a membership to Quick Sprout University.. and if you read the reviews online you will see that the course is useless! BUT.. with that being said the Quick Sprout blog has some good info. If you can ignore the guru madness the meat of the info is good.. and there are a lot of good case studies. Even if most of it is bullshit and made up.. you CAN learn some stuff from Neil Patel. The big thing to remember.. don't do as he says.. do just like he does. He will tell you to publish content and "attract links" but if you know what's up you know he is part of a link group. Let's just say he can get you any link you want if you have the money. NEIL PATEL (http://neilpatel.com/blog/) The guru man is BACK.. this is his personal blog and he is on a mission to generate traffic and get his personal blog visitor numbers up. He documents everything and for all we know his stats and info could be 100% made up and fake.. but the steps he talks about make sense. Neil has some good writers.. lets get real.. he isn't writing 3,582 blog posts every week. He has teams that write his crap and he just slaps his name on it. He is proof that you can build a strong personal brand and rape noobs if you just have some money to start with. I check out his personal blog (and Quick Sprout) once a month. I can't stomach his bullshit.. so I skim them monthly and see if there are some good gems. Once in a while you will pick up on something. Thankfully most BHW members are anti warrior forum so they should be able to spot Neil Patel's nonsense from a mile away. Even though he is after the noobs and their last $100 you can still learn some things from this wannabe guru. BACKLINKO (http://backlinko.com) This guy is a guru.. but not in the annoying sense as most. He posts some really good info and he has some really epic blog posts.. not so much recently.. but if you read his stuff from a couple years ago you can get some good ideas. He is pretty quiet compared to Patel.. he isn't posting how awesome he is and stroking his own dick on social media or guest blogging (for links) on every site. I have a feeling this "guru" actually knows what he is doing and just travels and has money rolling in from ranking his own shit. The attention starved will be all loud to draw attention.. Dean just chills.. posts an occasional blog post.. but I'm sure he is making money off his list somehow. I don't subscribe to these guys lists so I have no idea what kind of affiliate products they sling. For all I know he could be raping noobs from his list too like all the rest. Anyway, look back for his 2013-2014 posts.. there are some really good ones. HUBSPOT (http://blog.hubspot.com) "Inbound Marketing".. (yaawnn).. they know it's all about link building and they just like to dress up link building topics with fancy names and strategies.. but when it comes down to it we all want links. Every blog has an agenda and HubSpot wants you to sign up for their over priced software and they want you to pay for a ticket to their yearly INBOUND event. These guys are about as cool as Moz.. but at least that don't have made up metrics. I'm sure their software is decent but they sell businesses on a dream. A dream that involves just posting content on their CMS and thinking money will roll in. HubSpot and the agencies that push their bullshit suck. The content on their blog is so fake.. there is nothing "real" about it. Stay away from it if you want to learn real SEO.. sorry but all of their content is written to get you to download their PDFs and eBooks. If you do that you will end up reading MORE useless crap.. all trying to sell you're their software. SEMRUSH (http://www.semrush.com/blog/) There are some great posts here.. but the trick is to sift through all the shit to find the gold. I'm not really sure where they find their contributors.. but it appears they take anyone with a pulse. I've seen 50 year old grandma bloggers guest post here and then I've seen some people with some decent SEO knowledge. The "Advanced SEO' category is probably the only one worth your time and even all those posts aren't really that advanced. This is another of the blogs I check weekly.. and if I'm real busy I check it a couple times per month. SEMRush is in the business of selling subscriptions to use its software so they want as much traffic as possible.. more content = more possible long tail traffic, so anything goes here. It appears they will let a space alien contribute if they submit an original post. Can't blame them! Heck, I just wrote a post here the other day about how to get FREE content for your blog. SEMRush knows what's up DUCTTAPE MARKETING (http://www.ducttapemarketing.com) Ah this is one of the original decent blogs. Not so much a SEO focused blog but there used to be a lot of good points about all marketing in general here. Just like anything, once it gets too big the focus is around making money. I can't blame the guy.. he is probably doing well.. But the blog is all about pushing people to buy their eBooks, training and systems. It has that noob bait feel to it now. If you visit this blog dig WAY back.. it started like 12 years ago. There is a ton of old blog posts that have good solid business advice. You aren't going to find old SEO gold.. but you can find solid strategies for building a business and marketing in general. If you are ever trying to kill some time jump in the blog archives. The new content is pretty watered down and worthless. MARKETINGPROFS (http://www.marketingprofs.com/marketing/library) This is another decent marketing blog and they typically only post quality stuff. There isn't much in terms of SEO content but for general marketing info this blog is legit. They are real strict with guest posts.. and you don't see the same clowns you see on SEMRush blog for example. The people that post on Marketingprofs are people you would want to listen to. They sell products.. but they are targeting a higher price point than some crappy $99 software, so the content needs to be higher quality. There is a lot more to business than just SEO so you need to have some general marketing blogs in your bookmarks.. and this is a decent one to read here and there. WORDSTREAM (http://www.wordstream.com/blog) For those that are into PPC this is a decent blog. And shocker.. they want you to sign up for their software too. I don't do much with PPC but I still like to read up on it and this is really the only PPC blog that I found that wasn't complete crap. Sometimes they try to be funny with their memes and gimmicks.. and it just reeks desperation.. but there is at least 1 decent post every couple months that I learn from. If you are into PPC you might like it more than me. There you have it. As you can see there are both good and bad points for each and every one. I like some more than others.. and some I read only for breaking news. Don't be scared to read other sites.. you can find some good info - just don't fall for the BS. Remember, these sites are in the game for the same reason you and I are in it.. to MAKE MONEY. They get their money from page views.. and they get page views by pumping out content.. both good and bad. If you have any other resources you enjoy reading which I've not listed here then please do share them with us. As always I hope you guys enjoyed the read.. Until next time.. Ciao for now!
