A theoretical scenario if you will.

Say you had a website and wanted to increase its ranking for keyword A.

Would it be better to say blast thousands of blog comments, article directory links, social bookmarking links, forum profiles etc. that were of low quality

    OR

Say try to find a handful (maybe 5) say PR 7 links.

In theory these high PR links are supposed to be worth thousands of these garbage links, so am I wasting my time building these crappy worthless links?

So would I be better off trying to get a handful of these high PR links and be done with it rather than waste my time building tons and tons of these links?

Because in theory since these high PR links are supposed to be so powerful, why not just go to some link broker and buy them and save time and effort?

Sure they may be expensive to purchase, but it seems like it may even out considering the amount of time/effort/money people waste building thousands of links with software that have subscription fees, VPS fees, proxy fees, captcha fees etc.

    Curious to your thoughts.

Depends on how long have you been running this website. If its new, getting a PR7 link is tough and will raise alarm as most of the people try to do this and eventually land up being sandboxed by Google. Start with the small blast to PR3 links then move upwords. Wait and repeat. All it takes is time. Its like body building, unless you exercise protien is not going to help you. Go slow and steady and you will see the difference yourself.

You have to balance both according to the competition...
if am competing for the keyword "aldskfaskdjflaksjdfl" i can do with bull shit links in quantity.

If am trying to rank for "change zte baud rate" a few quality links will do the job, and maybe comment spam will also cut it.

but if am competing for "buy steroids" i need quality links, in quantity.

    So, to cut it short:
You need quantity and quality both, increasing the quality and quantity both as you work towards harder keywords.

I think link diversity is very important. High PR links don't exclude quantity low quality links, the link scheme has to look natural.

Low quality links buffered through some decent properties are probably the easier low cost way to go IF the site has already some trust.

The "Quantity vs. Quality" Debate is also very relavant when it comes to content.

It is easier to get backlinks and rank if you produce quality.

    But do both for backlinks

quality wins hands down, but quantity is easier.

I launched a new site within my niche the other week and linked to it from the homepage of my money site.

A single PR5 link from a 12 year old ontopic homepage with no other OB links put a new site with no content apart from the webdesign latin top 3 for it's main search term - so quality wins
