I have a few sites that rank well for medium competitive keywords with no or just a very few natural links. But hundreds of people search for the site name monthly. Google would rank a site higher if there're more people interested in that site. I've been in SEO business for 10 years. My current strategy is to get links only if they bring traffic. You'll always win with this strategy because you always get consistent traffic.

User behaviors (CTR to your site on SERP) is big part of ranking algo.
It depends on your site. Guest posts, post on Q&A sites, or forum, or groups could drive hundreds of visits if you find the right ones.
All (or most) big authority sites don't build links for links. They pay for traffic. They acquire natural links with quality content and good traffic. What I said is that the same strategy works (at least partially) for small sites too. Links was 70% of ranking algo in 2005, but it's probably just 30% of ranking factors now. User behaviors is an important ranking factor that most marketers choose to ignore.

So you got the actual point of this thread.
CTR, bounce rate, pageviews/session, time spent on site per session (any things you see in webmastertools as well) are more accurate measures for site quality than links from PBN. Google ranks quality sites higher than crappy sites. I thought those're common sense. I'd have changed the title to "The most important ranking factor that some marketers actually don't know". This is a whitehat subforum, and my sig is about Facebook.
