You should check out your #1/2/3s competition, see if they are the same, and analyse the differences between you & them if they ain't moving.

And all the updates also are likewise messed up because their entire algorithms are fingered beyond repair. So, updating over something fingered beyond repair, results in further mess.

I experience the same situation with one of my blogs.

But it wasn't as drastic as your case.

The traffic dropped 33–40%, and after about two weeks, it bounced back to normal.

Google is definitely doing an update.

A least your situation ended on a happy note.

When you look at previous threads here regarding past Google updates, the stories that many online publishers share don't have happy endings.

Regardless of Google's mood swings, serious online publishers should just continue to interlink their own posts strategically to each other as well as produce quality content based on the actual behavior of people who visit their sites.

Everything else should fall into place sooner or later.
