Google Wave DEAD: Google Kills Its 'Email Killer' :ponder:

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. ? Google Inc. said Wednesday it will shut down Google Wave, a Web-based program that lets people chat, share files and collaborate on documents in real time.

In a blog post, Google said Wave "set a high bar for what was possible in a Web browser." The Web search and software company pointed to the ability to drag files from a computer desktop into the Web application and to see what someone else was typing as they typed it, character by character.

"Wave has not seen the user adoption we would have liked," said Google senior vice president Urs Holzle in a blog post.

Google said it will maintain the Google Wave site at least through the end of the year, and its technology will find its way into other Google projects. Parts of the code are already available as open source.

Google explained, "We don't plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects."

When it launched, many suggested Google wave would be an "email killer" or "Facebook killer." Invitations to Google Wave were a coveted hot commodity that reached bids of up $5,000 on eBay.

What went wrong? ReadWriteWeb speculates Google Wave may have been "daunting" and "proved accessible to too few people." Search Engine Land wonders if "it offered too many possibilities," adding, "Beyond that people didn?t necessarily see the need for Wave, even if it was more productive and efficient than more conventional tools."

Yea I heard the news. It's always the same with most of google's products. They just keep releasing new stuff but don't invest anything to promote it. No wonder no one uses the stuff.

Waiting for google me now, lets see if it can be the NEXT BIG THING as they claim it to be.

Things get shut down when they don't work, new things come out and they don't always take off. Many before it and many to come.

I think the main problem was, not to release google wave for all users at once. Wave is something that you don't understand if you can't actively use it. So to make it a closed beta was a big mistake IMO.

To be honest, I have never really understood what it all about was.

my thoughts exactly. I bought my google wave invite off eBay for $30 lol.

Lol :) I had as many invitation i wanted...I could give you for only $1 :D. Too much 30$ lol :).

Motherfuck google. I hate them and their holier than thou attitude. They are so plateaued right now it's laughable. They had their day, made their bank, bought up everything in site and are stuck with nothing even remotely resembling somethig new. As much as I dislike Facebook, they are eating googs lunch and will eventually overtake them in search also.

i am sure they tracked and recorded everything that was shared, seems to be the trend with google

Overhyped and over-wrought. That stupid "invite" crap was what killed it. I never even heard that it was open to all now. I mean, who needs all that exclusivity on the web?

I dream of the day when I can release a project and not really have to worry if it works or not.

as long it is not profitable , what the hack , stop the service,

I'm still suffering when google terminate google pages services.

I always find most things from google difficult to understand, I honestly believe that Google are panicking about holding on to their position, although I cant see them slipping just yet, but we all no that the mighty fall at some stage.
