Hi guys,

I've been a reader of the forum for a while and really enjoy it. This is my first question, so apologies if it's been asked before. I did do a search to see if it had but I'm not sure if the answer to my question has been compacted into one post.

Basically, I'm a white hat seo but have a few greyish ideas I want to try out. My main concern while I experiment with these is making sure the blackhat sites and the whitehat ones never get linked.

I've seen a few people mention about covering your tracks, but was wondering a) what I need to be concerned about and b) what tools/processes are best for doing this so I can sleep peacefully at night?

Any suggestions?

First off, if you are new to this you are going to make mistakes.. At least hide them.. Use proxies.. Second.. Don't try blackhat techniques on your whitehat sites until you are 100% of the outcome... Create a testing site...

I'm relatively new myself, but those are the things that got me in trouble initially...
 
Definitely do this one step at a time, and double check EVERYTHING!!!!!!
 
Proxys are your friend. The referrer header is your enemy! Do some poking around these forums and you'll learn a thing or two.

Been doing some reading here on BHW and getting a bit more familiar with things before I launch into anything too wild.

Will read up on Proxies and the likes. There seems to be a lot of information here :)
 
joebert is absolutely right, you must maintain two parallel worlds. You may need some practical help in understanding what this means, so here are some pointers:
- register your black hat domains with privacy so no one can discover that they were registered by the same person who registered your white hat sites.
- host your blackhat domains on different account with a different hosting provider
- use two browsers one for bh one for wh.
- clear your cookies when moving from one site/account to another. I use Opera as my second browser and set it to clear all cookies and the cache every time I quit. When I log out of one account I just quit opera and restart and I'm a new person for the next login. My firefox cookies remain intact because that is where I do my regular browsing
- be particularly careful of google. they use cross-domain cookies (which is as black hat as you can get, btw) to snoop on you, so if you do something dodgy on blogger, they will use the same cookie to identify you on delicious or adsense or whatever. just be plain paranoid.

How would one go about registering a domain AND getting hosting under a fake identity/name, without going completely illegal?? Also, when you monetize, are you registered under aff/CPA/whatever under a fake name/identity?

Very helpful.. This is exactly the kind of information ive been looking for. I would like to look into this a little further so if you can recommend any good resources that would be fantastic!

Most of that is unnecessary imo. I have a lot of blackhat sites and a few whitehat sites. Some of my blackhat sites have been banned but never caused a whitehat site to be banned. Some of these blackhat sites did have public registration info (which I agree should be made private) but I never clear browser cookies or change browsers when going between sites. Thats just a little too paranoid. I also have some blackhat sites and whitehat sites on the same hosting accounts. Its easy when your on a shared ip with 300 other websites. Google wont ban them all and they have never banned my whitehat sites. On my vps' and dedicated server though, I do put them on different ip addresses.

It's not like you need a fake id fake credit card fake passport etc when you open a hosting account! You don't really need to go that far. It's just a good idea to use privacy when registering a black hat domain, and don't put them on the same server with your white hat sites if that's all there is on the IP. As dumdumz aptly points out if there are 100's of web sites on one IP you should be ok.

Having said that, recently Jerry West circulated an interesting email explaining how Mike Filsaime got a website miscategorized in a url blocking database because it was on the same IP with another web site that accidentally had the word 'sex' in the url (something like itsexceptional.biz or whatever...) so yes, bad associations can do bad things.
 
I usually register domains with godaddy but privacy there costs extra. Can you recommend other registrars that offer this service free/cheaper? I did a little Google for this but wasn't sure which ones were the best
 
You can get a year free privacy if you order 5+ domains at godaddy.
Just order a few extra info domains and you get privacy for all of your domains (1 year)
 
apologies if this has been said but I have 60 domains with namecheap.com and they offer privacy with every domain purchase
 
Check and double check everything. Keep your BH domains on a different account, host, and nameserver - away from your WH domains.
 
Just bought a name at namecheap so will try them out! Managed to find a coupon site that gets regularly updated as well. If anyone wants it - hxxp://www.namecheapcoupon.com/ - not much, but still feels good to get a discount. :)
