The Far Future of SEO

I haven't seen this mentioned on here so I'm gonna bring it up. Some of you may know that futurist Ray Kurzweil was appointed as Google's head of engineering a few months back. If you know anything about Kurzweil, you'll know he has big ideas. One of them happens to be building a human-level artificial intelligence. He plans to do this, as far as I know, while working for Google. He wants to use the massive amount of resources that the search engine has to build this thing. What this entails is no more basing searches on keywords and links. It'll all be based on understanding language in the way that humans do. I don't know how possible this is, but it's interesting to think about (to me anyway). I put it to you BlackHatWorld: do you think Kurzweil's ever gonna build this super-intelligent AI to serve as Google's new search engine algorithm? If not that, maybe one that's as intelligent as Jeopardy's WATSON? What does this entail for how we do SEO?

I can't post links to two of the videos where Kurzweil talks about his job at Google, but they're on the youtube channel SingularityHub. If someone else (who can) wants to post them here, please do.

Well he is ambitious isnt he? No problem by then we will have tools to game that AI super machine. Keywords were cutting edge
and we gamed those. Point is as long as there is a system there will be guys like us to punch it in the face and bank.
 
If that is the case then most people will just have to make sure that they are spinning very well. Most likely a very good spinner will be available due to demand.
 
The long run future of SEO is decentralized search. No matter how much money Google invests, they can't keep the centralized model of one corporation + big datacenters controlling WWW search.

There'll be the development of an open, distributed search system that every computer on the net will participate in. Google is not the future of the WWW even if they had hired Isaac Asimov.
 
While you reading your post, I couldn't take Hummingbird out of my head.

Maybe it is because this is exactly what hummingbird is trying to accomplish.

That sounds like a very interesting future though at the same time I would imagine it would have its pros and cons.

I could see ISPs (under the pressure of government) being more strict due to things being decentralised hence no control over potentially harmful content.

This would lead to all sorts of other privacy related issues.
 
Even if he does make such thing, we'll still be able to game the system. There are fricking 12 year old hackers who penetrate the government's system with success. There are way too many of us to not be able to bypass such thing.

If you're not open minded then you will not see the possibilities at the end of the tunnel.

Hadn't heard of this before. There's always the worry though that whoever builds the network will somehow take power for themselves.

Yeah, there'll be challenges, but as far as privacy goes it can't get much worse than it is now.... A decentralized and distributed system will actually spread the privacy problem into billions of smaller PC's, instead of just letting one corporation centralize the spying....

Also, there can be distributed trust for search, like bitcoin is for money.... Search results are distributed and a crypto=hash goes with it making sure jon doe didn't tamper with the results.... A truly globalized and distributed search system.

I can't imagine Google keeping up with iti any longer.

Look at buy viagra, a f'n kenya site is nr. 4....shit's broken already and there's a talking head on youtube telling people how to disavow links....THAT is a broken system my friends and it's going to join Altavista sooner than later.

I had this idea years ago....and I've heard others propose similar ideas on the net. I don't see a centralized search system in the future, it's gonna be distributed. Especially as private connections reach the gigabyte/second speed level, people will be able to exchange large search indexes in milliseconds....

Unfortunately, google has a big team which means they will always be one step ahead of 90% of the blackhatters since we are keeping information a secret. Of course, 10% will still make money.


In the next 5 years or so, google will try their best to eliminate webspam and this will ultimately make people either pay for adwords or create their own private network.

Time will definitely tell but as long as theres BlackHatter's there's always going to be a battle and honestly I think it's one that will never end. Google's Algorithm is constantly changing and maturing but so are the tactics and methods used by those like us. Google's Algorithm is only as smart as the people who create it and as long as there's people just as smart going against it, the Algorithm will truly never work.

Quite the contrary in my opinion.

If you have millions of copies of parts of an index, it's much more difficult to manipulate that many than it is to manipulate just one large database like google.... Also, with distributed search, there could be thousands of search algorithms and each person could choose one....it's basically impossible to manipulate as there would be infinite algorithms and infinite search types....not just the type decided by google....

Two issues here aren't there.

Firstly the AI - it needs to be in the order of "frikking awesome"
But the main issue is the computation cost. The more sophisticated the algo and text parsing, the more CPU time it's going to take. - and (he says - repeating the obvious) the internet is FUCKING MASSIVE! and grows every day...
The AI...maybe 5-10 years. The cost and bandwidth required to do it.. add at least another 5 for it to be done in a way that leaves Google a profit. Let's face it, if Google don't make a profit they won't do it.

So I can see something like this (or close).

And there will be a way to game it when it happens - of that Google can be abso-frikking-lutely certain

As for the user generated search in the dispersed node structures. Oh man - I can't WAIT for that day. Node duplication, "shop window" nodes, it'd be like those cowboy towns from the 1880's with the tiny shack with the massive false frontpiece to make it look grand. The ability to make your data look like whatever you wanted if you had the skills - Make it look good to loads of different incoming requests by presenting them with what they wanted to see regardless of what was really there or not... and no Google to feck it up for you.
 
Automation is usually cheaper than human work. If they can find a correlation between the average human judgement over different niches regarding usability. they should be able to build the AI. About high computional costs, they will probably apply this to high search volume keywords first in order to keep costs in check and with regular random checks they can also use it on lower search volume keywords.

If they are smart, and probably are, they are already trying to predict human judgment before they hire people on checking certain sites manually.

Once results are close enough, they'll be able to pull statistics out if it and automate.
 
Kurzweil at Google = 50/50 chance Skynet comes online in the next 10 years, after that SEO won't matter.

Really though I see more resources going into predicting behavior based on consumer data profiling and less on specific keywords. Target can already tell when a girl is pregnant looking at what she buys, sometimes before she even does. That kind of stuff is going to expand instead of people waiting around for users to consciously choose to search by keyword. The machines will know what we want before we do.
