Don't be ridiculous. Hackers are not waiting behind the corner to get to your computer. Use common sense and you are not going to get hacked.

Of course they don't, they have computers doing that for them. Automation, don't know if you 've ever heard the concept ;)

Suppose an exploit happens that gets you hacked when you open a jpg (has happened in the past). What will you do, stop viewing all images from your PC?
Suppose an exploit happens that gets you hacked if someone sends you a malicious UDP package (has happened in the past). What will you do, disconnect permanently from the Internet?
 
I bet a lot of people would agree with me that XP was the best OS and Vista being the worse.

Im taking my XP to the grave. :)

Why would I stop viewing images/stop my internet if I have already been hacked? After I clean my computer I just won't download that .jpg again.

I've used cracked Windows without updating them for the last 15 years and I've never been hacked. I've never used anti-virus software either, so it is safe to assume that I will be fine.

A lot of people do not visit sketchy websites and even if they do they have some sort of software to protect them. As long as people know to stay away from 1MB file named "Godzilla 2014 - Full Movie.exe" it is safe to assume that they will not get hacked.

You don't have to visit sketchy sites. You visit your favorite site that allows avatar uploading in the comments and poof, your pc is a zombie nest. And I was not referring to renamed images as exploits. I was talking about exploits in the library that handles the image display on your screen :)

Never been hacked -> you 've never noticed your pc was a zombie.
 
If you have sufficient amount of RAM then windows 7 is better option.

Well, yeah. Since I do not use an anti-virus I won't notice that I have been hacked unless my PC gets very slow. Oh, well, as long as my PC does not lag and my personal information is safe I am fine with being a zombie. :D
 
I bought my pc in 2004. After getting one stupid virus or trojan or whatever it was in 2008, i just formatted it again with xp, with no updates at all because it was cracked and with no antivirus. Since then, i'm just doing regular checks and formats(with no updates and antivirus), and doing normal work. Nothing, and i mean NOTHING has happened till today. And i'll keep it that way, no matter what happens.
One thing for sure is, they cannot upgrade my CD. Long live XP!

Dude you are a little too paranoid. ;) If your careful with the sites you visit and the stuff you download, chances are you won't have any trouble.

Okay so there's probably gonna be 10 different answers here but I'll ask anyway.

My main desktop runs Win 7.

I have another desktop right next to it with separate OS - Win XP. I rarely use it but would prefer to not just trash the damned thing. Should I upgrade it to Win 7? I cannot even imagine using Win 8.
Should I keep it as it is considering how rarely I use it?

As far as I can remember I don't think I have any passwords stored on it other than my login.

What would you guys do if you have a box with XP that you want to keep?

There 's no reason to worry about a PC that does not contain any valuable information. Just remember not to login to your PP account from there :)
 
I used XP for years it was an amazing OS. when vista came out it was a POS and I refused to use it. when windows 7 came out I assumed it sucked as well but a friend convinced me to try it and it straight up owns XP hard.

switch to windows 7 you'll never look back.
