The end is coming for Windows XP

For those of you thinking this is no big deal, you are wrong. This is a very big deal, possibly a ruinous one for many of us who don't make changes.

I know a lot of people still use Windows XP. Microsoft is finally going to stop supporting all XP updates as of April 8.

This is a true end of life for the product. MS will no longer support fixes to XP, period, and if you are running XP, you seriously need to have a plan for leaving it behind.

The main reason is that Microsoft operating systems are based on the previous operating system. Windows 7 is based on Windows XP code.

When a vulnerability is discovered, MS sends an update out to all supported Operating Systems. At the same time, so the hole gets patched.

Because windows XP is no longer being supported, and Windows 7 is based on XP code, when any future windows 7 vulnerabilities are discovered and patched, the equivalent XP vulnerability will not be fixed.

That is bad enough, but by examining the fix applied to Windows 7, hackers will have a roadmap to use to hack XP.

The result of all this is that after April 9, you might as well consider yourself to be one of many people using your computer at the same time if you are on windows XP.

For people like us, that means that all our accounts, passwords, wallets, and everything will be totally exposed to anyone smart enough to start harvesting, and it will steadily get worse as time goes by.

install windows 8 and revert back to windows xp.

Thanks for the heads up. I am a huge fan of XP and using it for a long time. I think it's time to update.

I havent tried Win 8 yet, I have 7 pro, and since XP lasted a decade I figure I have 8 years or so before I have to move up.

If you actually read that you would have seen that it requires a crooked technician to infect the ATM with malware first by linking to the ATM computer via USB.

really not worried about official updates, any good antivirus will keep 98% of the problems away.

Apart from that you can learn more about exploits.
Hackers don't release exploits before they hack, they hack and then they release exploits.

I was using XP until end of 2013 i installed Windows 8 only because of this day no support
Otherwise XP was best OS in my opinion better than even 8

every version of windows just suck more than the previous version, to me Windows 98 was the best.

As soon as these exploits get exposed the script kiddies are gonna be all over it. What a truly idiotic statement.

Even the anti-virus industry is stopping support after 2016.

Apparently you do not understand the significance of unpatched operating system exploits.

Thanks for the informative thread. It's a shame thou, WinXP was the most stable Windows OS I have ever tried.

I learned a long time ago that no matter what you do you can't secure windows properly which is why my front end is exposed to the internet with Linux and a pFSense box as a firewall.
