Facebook is to add a "dislike" button to its social network, founder Mark Zuckerberg has said.
In a Q+A session held at Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, California, the 31-year-old said the button would be a way for people to express empathy.


He said Facebook was "very close" to having it ready for user testing.


A "dislike" button has been constantly requested by some users since the introduction of the now-iconic "like" button in 2009.


"People have asked about the 'dislike' button for many years," Mr Zuckerberg told the audience on Tuesday.


"Probably hundreds of people have asked about this, and today is a special day because today is the day that I actually get to say we are working on it, and are very close to shipping a test of it."


However he went on to say he did not want it to be a mechanism with which people could "down vote" others' posts.
Instead, it will be for times when clicking "like" on "sad" posts felt insensitive.

Damn, I used to enjoy "liking" when people had bad days at their regular 9-5 jobs. Now I'll get caught, lol :D

I think its also the end of posts such as "Facebook will donate $1 when you hit like"
 
I hit the link but it said page not found? Dislike button will probably be misused.. I understand what you mean about empathy but I can see people just being di*ks shoot people sometime click like on horrible stuff.

Yes, I'm also a bit concerned that facebook spamming might take a hit but we'll have to wait and see how its actually implemented. In fact I don't think they'll put an actual dislike button as people generally do not like to be "disliked" and facebook will not do anything to piss off real people and loose user base. Its going to be more of an empathy button as they said. HAve to wait and see...
 
If it is to be understood appropriately this button is still a measure of engagement meaning someone was motivated to click the button ... which makes it a monetizable/measurable action for facebook. In essence the dislike button or empathy button or whatever it becomes shouldn't present an opportunity to be gamed in any way other than to garner engagement the same way clicking the "Like" button already does.

So the dislike button is very likely to actually just be another "Like" button when you drill it down.

This is conceptually different from a voting based system such as is employed at youtube or reddit where a dislike literally symbolizes that you don't like something. Clicking "dislike" at facebook is as likely to indicate you have interest in a topic or story as is clicking the like button. It will not have the same effect as flagging for example in terms of being a negative strategy to impair competitors.

This type of social engineering will still be possible particularly in the early stages of "dislike" button deployment. While most people have been exposed to the inverse of this story, this presents a new way to frame the proposal, so this is a great point and example Inception_AC.
 
its not something I would do because my Morals say no, but I know some use tactics like this. Each to their own :)
 
It won't be long until we see those "1,000 Facebook Dislikes for $10" services popping up.
 
Finally! People were liking everything, even bad/sad things like people dying or getting injured.
 
Good point, didn't think of it like that but of course it is still engagement.
Bit like celebrities that make a career out of being hated....
