The Complete Guide to Starting a Website [2016 updated]

great info. One question I have is when it comes to purchasing a domain name do you recommend spending the extra money for the privacy feature or just spend as little as possible?

I have seen this information sold as a little ebook - you could also offer this as a bonus to any product and it would be valuable.

Nice. I'm actually about to launch an ebook that covers all the technical stuff involved with making a website. Planning to release it for free on BHW.

just a little note

"Google Adsense - Google Adsense , to register an account your site must be at least 6 months old..."

i got adsense for my site after a week of it being up.

thanks for the posting either way just wanted to note that :)

Thanks ;)

Remember, if you need any further help, feel free to ask on the thread (just reply here rather then PMing me)

Hi, first of all great guide..

But im the uber noob here. And im just getting started with this actually..

i have a few questions to ad to this guide?.

1# when i buy a domain name and fx go to hostgator and buy a webhost... what do i buy there?. there are options like vps servers? dedicated servers?. and what does that mean?

2# once ive bought a webhost and a domain... what then?. is that all to make a website?. i just need to design it after that?.

3# how do i have the ''rights'' to this website?. were do i log in?.

thanks

- the noob

#1 I recommend shared unless you have a special project, you are a newbie so I suppose you won't be eating up a lot of bandwidth etc.

#2 Forward the NS to the web host (ask them about the nameservers and how-to), and no need to design, there are plenty of free themes for all the scripts out there.

#3 are you talking about wordpress? if so, then site.com/wp-admin (then you have to fill in the username and password which you set when you were installing wordpress.

Great post Lukab. A few questions:-

1) If i make a website for a medium business what do you recommend for domains..i mean should ithe info private or should i get whois protection?

2) Can you recommend me a place to get decent themes and scripts that i can get for free?

3) I have basic HTML knowledge, anything else i should check before starting the project?

4) What sort of SEO do you recommend? And should i wait till some weeks before starting SB or other tools blasting?

3) What budget should i have approx? I asked them 200$ for domain+design+hosting.

Thanks
Neo

1) I really can't answer that, but I would say don't put who is protection, so your business looks more professional, the clients might think "Why did he put who is protection, what is he hiding" ...

2) You can use
-Wordpress
-Joomla

and more, for themes just google "free [script] themes" ;) , use a twist.

3) Not sure what you mean

4) I wouldn't recommending blasting Xrumer/SB directly to your site, do it to your backlinks.

You can do ALL kinds of SEO, check out the services here (the top services of SEO), and see what they do, then you do it yourself ;).

Thanks for the reply. I have decided to use a free business theme and modify it.

3rd question was do i need to know any other language besides HTML for modifying the themes like PHP etc.

5th question was about how much should i charge for my service.

Sorry if i sounded too vague.

Well I have no experience in any coding / programming languages, I just know the basics, ... you can download a wp theme, check the files and check if you are able to edit them ;)

5) what kind of service

yeah your going to need at least a basic understanding of PHP to modify the themes. Most of what you'll be changing will be the html code, but that code is embedded within the php code of the files. You'll need to at least be able to follow the code to find the bits of html you want to change, and you need to know enough to make sure you don't accidentally modify a bit of the PHP. Something as simple as deleting a semicolon can break the whole script.

You don't have to necessarily be a proficient programmer though. I couldn't write a PHP script from scratch if I needed one to save my life, but I can modify the hell out of one with no problem. If I have something to start with I can modify it to the point the original code is no longer there and the function is now for something totally different. lol. If you have any experience with structured programing, you should be able to figure it out. If you aren't sure about some particular bit of code you can usually do a search on google and find an answer to what your need.

Thanks for the advice greywolf. As usual and exemplary and thorough details.
+rep to both luka and greywolf.
