I've had success targeting less competitive / longtail terms, well made robots.txt' / no index header, clever internal linking, ensuring product & homepage don't go stale by implementing ways of getting regular fresh content on them (blog/news posts, product reviews) and "diverse" link building campaigns. Common sense FTW ...
I focus almost entirely on ecommerce these days and I couldnt agree more with some of the earlier posts regarding A+ customer support/looking after your customers. Hardest part is getting a customer base formed, bit of TLC and some elbow grease ... once you get there and your overwhelmed with orders its a niiiice and reassuring feeling.
Until Google brings out its next update of course
