The best eCommerce setup?

I usually always use OpenCart but I just tried Magento and wow, it is too confusing. I cant even figure out how to get products on the home page. Setting up a theme took me 2 hours of googling to find. Not user-friendly at all!

i would say wp ecommerce is the best one

I have several eCom sites (for last 4 years)

I use shoperpress (wordpress) for making site that have very few products. Its easy to set up and you'll get tons of customization option.

But if you are serious about eCom and have more than 50 product i would suggest magento. once you get to know it, you will never wanna go back. its bit expensive to maintain (share hosting will not work good).

Do not use - OpenCart , Prestashop. I had bad experience doing proper onpage seo for them. (not sure if they included new add on)

get some one from Odesk or freelancer.com to set up and input all ur products. Will save you a lot of time.

I have worked many eCommerce package. In between them i feel good in zencart. it is easily editable.

Good on your for getting a VPS, the knowledge you gain from setting it up etc will come in handy in the future.

Think outside the box, and remind yourself you're doing it just for $. Every guy on here wants to sell iPods etc. Forget that, perhaps think of something you have no/little interest in...

Take time to build up a nice list of wholesalers, browse their products, find a product, use Google's Keyword tool to see if the product is popular in the SERPS. Then check out competition. If it ticks all boxes you've got a niche. Build an ecommerce site around it.

Without pointing out the obvious here, especially If you're operating from home, it makes sense to sell products that are small. It'll save you time on wrapping, postage fees and storage space.

Don't overstock at first, a small selection of products will save you money even if profit margins are lower. When your site gains traction then buy in larger quantities.
