Cool list, makes you wish you started snapping up domains back then... damn me for only being 2 years old in 86'...

I remember the mid nineties. You could still grab up a lot then. They were $100 a year then if I remember right. I did get one that I held onto for a few years then sold for 20k.

Those were the smart companies... If only I had a time machine... I'd still be sitting on walmart.com and/or google.net

microsoft.org.au is still out there :) I wonder for how many minutes after I post this.

if you did, there wouldn't 've been google nor walmart :D hah

Both the Internet and the WWW were created in multiple stages. 22 years ago, in March 1989, the creator of what eventually became known as the WWW published the first formal proposal of the concept.

So how could domain names go on sale 4yrs before 1989?

Almost made it... A site I manage was registered one month after the oldest on this list and it's still going strong.

maybe it was already running before it was formally standardized.

These domains were registered back when the internet was called National Science Foundation Network (NSFNET) and there was only 1 backbone which was run on a 56kb modem. No one could predict the future back then and alot of people and companies were taking a gamble by registering a domain name. Back in the '80s you also couldn't just register a domain name. The internet and domain names were pretty much controlled by the US government so there was probably a bunch of hoops you had to jump through to get a domain name. There was also the cost of not only registering a domain name but also having a computer to host your website. I think the term "premium domain names" is mainly due to Google's PageRank algorithm. There is also the explosion of domain name registration mainly from discounted domain registrars (ie: Name.com, NameCheap, and GoDaddy). I remember when the cheapest price for a domain was ~$35/yr from register.com (which still today sells them at that price).

How I wish to have registered all the fruit names back then. orange.com, or maybe apple.com ..

good list, you do have you get this kind of information or list??

think.com, what a beautiful domain. Always love it ! Powerfull, brandable, short.
