I know that you guys have a lot of experience here.

What would you say for you is the #1 thing that you have realised is crucial in order to drive significant traffic to your website?

For me it has been the realisation of the importance of a really long tail.

The importance of writing for the user and not for the search engine. Well you know what I mean

If you talk about how to get traffic from search engines especially Google, follow Google's rules then you will get traffic from Google. You can drive traffic by using long tail keywords.

This. There are other "platforms" that can give you as much traffic as google. Of course not everything is for free, lol.

That's a good one!

Mine was going to be "Don't put all your eggs in one basket." You never know when a technique is going to suddenly stop working or some change is going to drastically alter a technique. So make sure you spread around your strategy to include a lot of different options.

For me it would be: Put hard work into creating content people actually can enjoy or is actually helpful to them
to keep traffic coming and not just get hits once.

What I have observed lately is that the search engine traffic does not usually lead but follows the traffic from other sources. If you are not getting any traffic from other sources then your Google traffic is more likely to fall down in the following days.

For that matter, social media is the best option for getting ever-expanding reach... While it may take a while to build your audience, but the good thing about this traffic is that all your followers keep getting your updates throughout their life.
