I am seeing a number of posts where people are sharing a download (any download in some cases) or a tidbit of information and then blatantly begging for Thanks and Reps in the thread. It's starting to irritate me and brings down the quality of genuine rep or thanks.

From now on whenever I see someone begging for thanks or rep in their post I am going to neg rep them. This is MY irritation and I am speaking for myself, not BHW.

Sorry but it's seriously starting to wind me up.

Rant over.

Most people over here simply don't know what is the difference between thanks and +rep:

thanks: Thanks for a share, download or a useful hint

+rep: Thanks for some quality knowledge I did not know before

Rather than neg-repping a member who constantly asks for thanks,
I will post a reply and take a moment to explain why it is frowned
upon. See my reply on the thread http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/member-downloads/463664-get-premium-proxy-switcher-pro.html#post4480632.

Then notice that the member made a reply and learned something from it.

Neg-repping them for asking for thanks doesn't really accomplish anything.
If you don't point out to him/her why you neg-repped them, they won't
know why they got neg-repped and will therefore continue what they
had been doing all along.

Cheers! - "Wiz"

Wise, patient words.

Wow, also just seen you have been thanked 40,994 times Wiz... that's crazy.

I think that in most cases people know that they shouldn't really be asking for thanks/rep in the first place but they still do it. When they get caught they obviously tell you that they didn't know because what else are they going to say? And since the reply is from a mod they will comply and treat it as a warning. Just my opinion.

What is the purpose of Rep & Thanks? Besides someone showing gratitude. Do I win a toaster or something if I get to 100?

I see some justice in neg repping Jr. Vips for this actually, which is where this trend becomes more of an issue. Many become Jr. Vips with the intention of offering a service or monetizing in some way from BHW, and such a trend can be seen as a way to inflate credibility.

JR. Vips should know better, and most of the time THEY DO. I have seen a few start very crappy threads and proceed to emphasize requests for thanks and reps.

The irony is that the MOST helpful threads I have ever come across, at no point in time made mention to give thanks/rep.

I think a gentle shunning works best with pushy members like that. Now can I get a little loving for my post? Just kidding, don't want to see that -12 hitting me!

And I never asked for a single one of them :)

There are smarter ways to "beg" for rep. Sharing something without any real value, and hoping some of the noobs will be blindly grateful is definitely one of them

Please refer to post #4 by monchichi in this thread. You won't win a toaster or refrigerator but gain Respect. If i see someone with huge number of thanks and big rep count, then I as a newbie will assume that the member who has high thanks count is popular in this forum and give priority to their posts than on a post from a member who has low thanks/rep. Obviously the thread content itself is good enough to determine whether its ok to give thanks or not but begging for thanks/rep sounds pretty lame to me.

You can exchange 100 Thanks for a pat on the back.

I took my Thanks and Reps into Starbucks once and
couldn't even buy a single cup of coffee with them! :)

That made my day! But i see you as a popular figure in this forum with enormous amount of thanks. Maybe if you participate in a meetup with members from this community, i'm sure you'll get tons of bouquets and special gifts haha.

Ultimately, I am not concerned about thanks and reps. However, if
a member wishes to show his/her appreciation for something I
have done to help him/her or the forum in-general, I see no
problem with that.

(BTW, if a meetup with the members ever does materialize,
I wouldn't be opposed to accepting a nice blue Lamborghini
Gallardo!) :)

You can pick up girls.

"You know, over at BHW my Reps is like 98 or something. Let's get out of here and I'll show you my place now?"
