Test if an expired domain is healthy?

Hello,

Discovered a few domains with good stats, and to the best of my ability I've checked that their not spammed.

I'll register these domains, put them all on separate hosting and see what happens when I write a few articles.

I'm assuming if these domains have issues, they won't get into the top 100 or never rank for any significant keywords.

Am I correct in thinking this? Or can a penalised domain sit on position 11 forever?

i recenytly bought 2 domains..both seemed cleared..good backlinsk and everything etc seems ok

turned out they have google manual penalty on them

I'm going to work on the basis the domains that are expired have a penalty or issues - but for £10 registration I might as well find out.

Did the penalty appear is GSC, or did they just not rank for any keywords at all?

yes it appeared in GSC and although i got it removed...the chance of it getting ranked is very low..

GSC should notice that there is a new Host... If you get Google to remove the penalty
(maybe ask the GSC support manually for help, worked for me once with a penalty for false usw of review schema.org)
there is a 100% chance to rank with that domain again like with any other without a penalty in their past.

In the end, the ultimate test is to try & push a site using a backlink from these domains.
After you've put the expired domain back online, wait 2 months then put a link to a specific target site ( find one with 0 backlinks in the last 6 months, position above #50 in serps). If the target site moves up within 2 months, you can safely assume that you bought 4 months earlier a decent expired domain.
It's not 100% accurate because I've seen backlinks that pushed down site A but pushed up site B, but that's a rare situation.. most of the time, if it moves up a target site, it will be good for your moneysite as well.

I'm planning on building these out as moneysites not as a PBN - hopefully I can rank for low to med competition keywords without much SEO apart from onpage.

I'll try what you've said, but keep it niche relevant. I'm assuming if a site can get onto page 1 and pushes a pos.50 site up the SERPS it's good to go.

What kind of metrics are good in your opinion? All of the 100+ RD domains I've looked at have been spammed just by looking at their anchors.

I'm hoping to jump on a 30-40 RD domain to get a faster ROI at 6 months compared to a fresh domain

to see if a domain worth having the cost of online apps/services to use kill the price.

Keyword "seemed". If you know how to check them properly, there's no need to test anything or waste money on penalised domains. Learn how to do your checks the right way. Anchors, historic anchors, archive, hosterstats, domaintools screenshots and common sense.

pray tell me master how to check for a manual penalty of an expired domain before adding it again in GSC?

I did, what could be done, to check the quality of domain including all the things you mentioned except hosterstats & domaintools screenshots.

hmm thats comforting...the penaty has been removed and there is no more manual action notification in Search console ..site is still not indexed though after 2 days

Hosterstats is the most important one. You can tell with pretty good certainty from the hosting history alone, whether the domain is clean or not. Give it a shot for sure.

Actually, there is a safe way to test the ranking power of the expired domain.
Safe as in creating a site under that expired domain, and publishing an article there, then submit that article to a good instant link indexing service.
If that article gets ranked within a couple of hours, and if the article has a ranking for that specific keyword - within top 50, then the link juice is good under that domain.
Most instant link indexing service do not carry forward your indexed links, thus, you can be assured that they can be somewhat safe to be used.

hmm, i had that issue with completely new websites too, just got indexed after 1-2 weeks, sometimes i can take a longer time depending on many things. There was once a statement by John Muller to this...
so i guess you already put your sitemaps to gsc and made the 'fetch with google' function in gsc... if the robots.txt shows no problems and the penalty is away it should index very soon, dont lose hope

1. That beats the purpose i.e. how to know a domain is good before buying it

2. I highly doubt that you can post an article on an expired domain and it gets ranked within hours...have you tried it yourself ?What were the kw metrices like difficulty, number of words etc etc
