terrified to cold call

Sorry didnt mean to repost but have just done it if I can be any help pm me. I have been round the track a few times. One of my services I offer on my website is telesales consultancy. I am not pushing my services but offering to help as I know how hard it is starting to do this.

Just remember this.

*No one in this world is better then you, NO ONE.
*For you to be successful in life it will involve you talking to people you dont know. Dont want to be successful? then go back to bed and dream.
*The worst outcome in reality is never even half as bad as what you have conjured up in your imagination.

Simple as that. Read that, and re read it until its something you actually believe.

Now, that's why I love this forum. Look at that, almost 50 replys! I don't have much too add, but just practise. Public speaking helps (if ur in school) Talk to yourself lol. When I want to convince someone I have a convo with myself. Works well, u get all your ideas out.

I don't cold call on the phone, I used to. I cold call in person. Some say get lost, some say book an appointment, some listen to what I've got to offer, sometimes I make a sale. I just need to get out more. You get to meet a lot of pleasant people male and female.;)

One of the most important things is to build up your confidence level. Right now, you seem to be worried about messing up. The only way you will get rid of that fear is to call people and mess up and then learn from your mistake.

Cold calling is something that you will learn as you get your feet wet. People can give you a hundred points of advice but it all boils down to your personality and your presence on the phone. For you to gauge that, you will have to just try it out.

Make a list of potential clients and start with the less important ones so you get enough practice. You can then improve what you do on a trial and error basis and then become comfortable with an approach that you can use for top level clients.

I once worked in a investment company where I had to make phone calls to important people like VP's, CTO, COO and sometimes even CEO's. I was absolutely terrified to even talk to their assistants at first but then became good enough to have 30 minute conversations with them.

Just take the plunge buddy and lift that phone and make a few calls without worrying too much. That way, you have already started learning and getting better.

Best of luck.

good day,

i am absolutely terrified to cold call business owners selling my seo service. how did you guys deal with the initial fear? thanks for your time.

There is no better way than to practice. Start out with older leads, you have virtually nothing to lose and less pressure to close on the phone. Get used to hearing "no" and overcomming objections. Take note of what works to keep the conversation going and what doesnt. As you see patterns, develop a "script" of things to say, how to approach them, and verbiage that leads the potential customer to a close. Write these down and use this "script" to mold your conversations. It will change over time and that is good. However, if you are not consistent in your conversations it will be hard to measure what does and does not work. I have worked in Sales and Recruitment for 8 years and have done very well using this method alone.

Also timing is very important. For instance, never ever call a restaurant between 11-2 pm. That's their rush hour and they will hardly have time to listen to what you have to say.

Cold calling is like approaching to girls. If you have an approaching anxiety, it means that you have a fear of rejection and sorry to say that but as long as you have this fear, you'll always get rejected. Every person has some insecurities but very rare people would like to do business or be friends with an insecure person.

Think about the worst case scenario. What is the worst thing that might happen? They'll maybe curse at you or hang up on you. That's it. Nobody's gonna hunt you down :) Believe me, honking at the wrong person at the wrong time on traffic is far more dangerous than making some cold calls.

Think it this way. You are the person who is going to save their business. You are the hero. They will make bags of money off your skills which will help them open another store or renew their old cars etc. etc. Be motivated and believe that you're their savior, the best call they picked up in their entire lives.

On the other hand, cold calling is not for everyone. But you can't know if you don't try. If you still can't get over your fear after 10-15 calls, then maybe it's really not your thing. Because making the call is not the important part, convincing them is. That's how you get paid. Try it and if you can't succeed, then just sacrifice from your profit and hire a professional telemarketer.

I would never cold call for Seo services. That would just be a mess. Most business owners don't believe on the internet or are intimidated by it. Many of them "have a website since 1997 but get no visitors and it's not good". I would do some foot work and have a face to face meeting, be ready to convince them and truly deliver. That's just me.

Once I was told one by one business owner (a biker shop) I called: "Why don't you chew the bark off my big fat log?" LOL. Then I lost it and told him that I would go there, gather up the leathery boys and have a pig "http://fantasti.cc/videos/permalink/empflix/Princess-Sera-Degrades-You---POV-humiliation/1399651/" style gangbang party on his leathery ass. He started cussing like Hulk Hogan after being inappropriately touched by Goldberg.

Almost nobody in the biz really 'likes' cold calling. The only difference between those who are uneasy about cold calling and those who aren't is their focus.

WINNERS focus on the money that's potentially on the other end of the line.

LOSERS fear the rejection.

Fortunately, this is an easy thing to fix and become a winner:

  • 1. tell yourself that you're going to crash and burn for an entire day. Your goal should be to make 40 attempts, make 20 contacts and get 20 'NO'S'.

  • 2. After that, you'll realize that the worst thing that can happen is that the other person says 'no'. That's it. They're not rejecting you personally, just the offer that you're making them.

  • 3. In the process of getting 20 'NO'S' you're bound to get a YES.

  • 4. You'll realize that a silly little 'NO' isn't a big deal...and that the YES'S make up for all of them anyways.

  • 5. You will now be focused on the money on the other end of the phone like a WINNER.

A tiger, in the wild, must hunt and kill for its food. On average, only 1 in 20 hunts results in a kill.

That's a measly 5% closing average. The tiger doesn't sulk. Or feel deflated. It disregards all of the 19 failed attempts and continues to focus on its mission.

You can learn to do the same.

All the best.

Forget cold calling then. If it's not your bag, judt don't do it.
Post some ads on Craigslist & Fiverr looking for sales team.
Offer purely commission-based (or anything they make over $x, they can keep). That way you're not paying anyone any money until they bring you money in.
If you're no good at something, don't train yourself to do it - it ends in nightmares, just get someone else to do it.

Michael Senoff has quite a few interviews about cold calling. I picked up a few really good techniques -- completely counter-intuitive to regular cold calling -- in an interview called "Cold Calling Techniques". It's an interview with cold calling sales guru Ari Galper.

I'd love to post the direct lin k but my "new to the forum" status doesn't allow me to :D
