DO VPSes for me mostly. They are cheap to start, and supports scaling up without a restart, and have load balancers too. However, it might not actually be cheaper if you have a huge requirment like what @neOtron was talking about. It will start failing once you have too many writes per day, or it will become too costly.

@sunnybay I guess with DO, your costs are very minimal. Spin a droplet and start using it, drop it when you don't want it anymore. Is it still the same?

I have a very large enviroment. Some VPSes from Contabo, some dedicated servers from misc providers I'd rather not share haha, some from digital ocean, some from vultr...etc.

about 30 dedicated servers of 32GB ram from hetzner - cost about $25-30 per month, and 20 hetzner cloud server (for load balancers),each $3 per month. and 5-6 of vultr servers(for extra backup or image cdn) . currently my monthly bill is about $900-$1000 per month.. my business is little down at the moment. last year it was double this amount

Not true bro. it all depends on how you infrastructure is setup. for example i pick the cheapest server there is and use them in a way that even if it fails it wont effect anything. i shared the above screenshot to explain this point. look at the reporting database cluster. it has typical 6 server cluster using 2 shards set and 3 replica set. even if any 2 server in this cluster it wont effect anything at all.

I use kafka so writings are always happening in background (the above diagram donot show kafka layout but its pretty generic 3 nodes cluster so i dint bother painting it)

i believe my current infrastructure is several folds lower compared what i might be paying if used aws or google cloud for the same capability

I was talking about getting a dedicated server from DO tbh. It should be expensive as f compared to what you get elsewhere ($25 for a dedi? Wow that's super duper cheap lol). Yeah, ofcourse the setup matters a lot! At the very least, I would channel everything through redis, for better job processing.

Oh sorry i though that "DO" was a typo or something lol . i just realised that it stood for DigitalOcean lol . ya DO setup will be very costly.
Also ya $25-$0 for a dedi is super cheap that's why i use them but there are certain disadvantages of using them.

first of all there is not support so its up to you how u manage them.

they are second hand servers so they can have hardware failure anytime so only use them if they are expendable in you setup.

but as these are hosted in germany so the ping time is about 500ms which is quite high. so i usually dont use them for front facing stuff like a website front end or admin panel .

Also they have HDD not SSD. but i dont really need them as i use distrubuted computing.

Also let me put a few simple and cheap saas scenario.

some of the small setup i have and my budget for them
1)Saas for Astrology/horoscope/quiz apps Api
2)Saas system for Backlink monitering . where it moniters new backlinks, dead backlinks, google indering and so on
3)Proxy scraper system

all three above dont require much computing so all i need is a small setup with high availability and reliability that the service should not go down.

Database size is also small which mysql can easily handle so i just use a mysql galera cluster of 3 tiny servers (2 gb ram , 20gb SSD , cost $3 per month)/ wrapping the whole cost of hosting panel and reliable database in almost $10 . whic is more then enough

As i collect logs also but the amount of logs is not high . wont exceed 10gb or something so i can just use another 2 gb ram , 20gb SSD , cost $3 per month . and install clickhouse in it for logs collection .

In short all all above 3 small saas setup i use about $15 per month. so far it hasnt failed me.
even if i need little more databases computing power i will replace galera cluster with 3 nodes of clickhouse server each $5 per month. so the cost will be about $20-25 per month

Flask backend, MySQL DB, bootstrap jquery frontend. Very basic but I think I wouldn't be able to get anything done by myself with something more complex.

@reuse yo, i somehow missed this post.

The advantage of using a pay-as-you-go service like AWS is that the cost is non-existent when you develop.
There are hundreds of resources how to cut costs in AWS. It is a good problem to have. You get what Im saying?

If AWS costs are a problem, that means you startup is getting traction
