Targeting US market as a .UK website.

Hi,

I recently purchased a website who's entire traffic is mainly from the UK. however, it barely has traffic from the US and I'd like it to be more focused on the united states market for CPM reasons

Should I change the content even though it dominates in the UK?, or should I open a brand new domain and 301 the whole website to it?

it depends on the content / audience etc, and if the same metrics would apply to the US market.
but if you do have traffic, then it makes sense it could also get traffic from the US, if it is transferable - the UK stuff could be proof of market.

on the flipside it may well be that the market in the US is far more competitive and harder to rank - which is why the site has more UK traffic.

In my experience, if it's a .co.uk and you want to target more globally / USA, you'll need to redirect it to a .com

Let me clarify about my site.

It is a website.co.uk that has around 200K Page views per month. DA according to Ahrefs is 42.
79% of the trafficis from the UK, 9% from the US and that's about it.
I earn mostly through ads and that's why it is important for me to convert the traffic and the rankings to a US based audience.

I think I will open a subdomain to each country, and use the alternate to determine which market I'll target.

Definitely doable. One of my clients runs an e-commerce store with a .co.uk and they have been constantly pulling massive traffic on their blog from the states with the help of strategic keywords that target the vegan community in certain US states.
