Targeting top 100 "Hot Trends" google keywords

So is targeting these keywords worth it? They must have huge numbers of searches, with a low number of competing sites, but the thing is, at least 10 or so large news sites will already have a story about the keyword it seems. Is it still worth it to snipe these out? If a large quantity is targeted, there has to be some hits, which could be a jackpot.

In my experience its really not worth it but my methods weren't blackhat but a shade of grey. I'm sure there are a lot of people here that have experience with trends but I'll give you my two cents.

To be successful with trends, you have to be selective about what you target. Its very possible to beat the big news outlets if you choose the keywords that have very few results. Example: "Joe Dickhead" opens fire inside a shopping mall somewhere in boontown Iowa. Nothing has ever been written about "Joe D" but now because of his antics everybody is searching for him. You might be able to do pretty well in teh SERPs if you optimize for the full name "Joe Dickhead", as the media will probably have a title tag like, "Man Opens Fire In Iowa Mall, Kills 4" or something similar. Additionally, they'll often refer to him as just "Dickhead" and not by "Joe Dickhead" which is what the hot search often is.

The reason I said "might be able to do well" is that you'll probably have a hard time ranking if you have a new site. The more domain authority the easier it'll be for you. Also the more spider activity you have goin on the better because speed is important here. A site with a ton of backlinks already is going to have a big advantage with the SE bots. Its going to be like you see in the movies, when you see editors trying to rush a breaking story to beat the deadline to print. So if you're using WordPress, set up a big ping list and then use a social bookmarker like BMD to get some quick anchored links back to your index for your keywords. The faster you do this the better.

Now back to domain authority. The way I've done this in the past is to setup a subdomain on a trusted site. A site that is in the entertainment or gossip niche works pretty well because you have keyword authority with stupid shit that makes it into trends and you'll get a little bit of this passed on to your new subdomain. A word of caution though, don't link from the main domain to your subdomain, especially if you plan on doing anything on the shady side. Its okay to link from your subdomain back to your main but not vice versa. Eli from bluehatseo wrote a pretty good post about orphaned domains that explains this. Basically this way, if your sub gets deindexed your main domain won't get hit with a penalty.

The most success I had was anticipating trends. Watch the trends like a hawk and start to get a feel for what goes hot. You'll notice after awhile that you can predict a lot of things that make it on that list. A lot of it is TV stuff. Check for guests on talkshows in advance and have the TV on while your at your comp. If something breaks in the news, you'll be able to react quickly. You're probably not going to be able to hit the first page for everything you post. Its hit and miss like everything but if you do nail one, be prepared to get xx,xxx amount of uniques in a very short time period.

As far as monetization goes, thats your call. I used AdSense and just worked hard on CTR because in most cases you're not going to be able to get a lot per click. Looking back, AdSense was probably not the best thing to use. I was a newb, didn't know what I was doing and had only one AdSense account too. Not to mention you could make a lot more money with a CPA offer than with AdSense, I just wrote a rambling post about nothing and just tried to be inflammatory as possible to induce as much fresh content via jackasses commenting on my drivel, to keep the spiders coming. Basically you want to draw someone in via the search engines from your title and then write a post with different keywords that will set off a decently high paying keyword and hope they click. Basically I came off as a drunk retard who could barely type. I never got slapped by Google but there was always a chance that it could happen, since it was just a shitty mfa trends blog. I'm just glad I still have my AdSense account. In the end, this shit gets tiring and ultimately I quit after awhile. I found that the money wasn't worth the hassle.

I'm sure I've overlooked a few things in my methods but that was the meat of it. I don't claim to know everything so there might be someone else who has a better more lucrative method than what I've outlined here. If so I encourage them to drop a few hints.

Just to let you know, I caught a subniche of the swine flu in the last few days. My site traffic went from negative to 20,000 uniques a day.

Keywords are not really big on money, but good idea would be to get an autoresponder going and capture emails.

Fully agree with inurhead's writing. You have to "anticipate" the trend, meaning that you keyword targets must be there "before" the demand shows. It is actually fairly easy to do once you watch a trend like a hawk, and do some visioning of where are going.

FYI, I got ranked #1 and #2 for some big time (previously not known) keywords on google, by anticipating the questions that were going to be asked, and adding real value there (and got lucky too.

My site has PR0 (a blog) but I beat some big time players for those keywords.

Use a google sniper method. If a page is moving up in serp, build a whole bunch of additional pages and point links from within the article bodies, and move that baby up. Better to have one winner than 20 losers

I am now doing something new with swine flu. Again anticipation, and ALSO, a public service (no splogging here, all researched and hand-made, and full of info..). You will make a name for yourself, you become an authority (just by synthesizing and disseminating info that lazy people would not otherwise get), and you would have the fun of your life (I am !). I also hit relevant blogs and forums and yahoo answers, with useful info. More traffic, care none for nofollow/follow.

This is very effective -- I've done this on a few occasions and had very good results.

Throw up a regular plain site and submit rss feeds and Social Bookmark and you can practically own the first page of Big G with a lot of these keywords.

It's been a couple weeks since I've done this...But, you can usually pick up $50 - $100 pretty easy with a gateway for an email or zip submit.

I'm trying to figure out how to make my own cpa gateway, because this would work well with PPC. I have a site right now that it'd work well with. I think you can blow it up with PPC since the clicks in most cases would be cheap..... now just to build my own gateway.

Is is ok to link to a ranking article from other previously published articles? their seems to be a time inconstancy in the eye of google istn' it? why would some one point to article from a article that has been published before it got published? Google can match the cached item and tell if their are inconsistancy like that , right ?
