Is it possible to use Facebook ads to get more members in a Facebook group?

As far as I've seen you can use facebook ads for:
1- Facebook Page
2- Facebook App
3- External Url

Now it doesn't state a "facebook group" but I'm pretty sure you can.

Just go to: http://www.facebook.com/advertising/ to find out all the information. Try creating a add for you groups beforehand you don't have to "pay" for it just play around with the add format.

You can get members into a group with facebook ads. I have used FB ads a lot before, let me know if you have questions

yes...fb ads are better for this purpose than for selling stuff

I suggest you promote facebook page/external url with ads.
Facebook groups are really hard to target to audiences.
Personal experience.
