Talk Talk Hack in the UK, should the company not be as responsible as the hacker?

please remove this topic if it is deemed to political, not my intention or to anger anyone, just my opinion really and would like to hear what others think

Was watching TV last night and seen the news about Talk Talk being hacked, again, and they then showed a story of an elderly guy being ripped off by con men who used data to trick him into his bank details from the first hack.

Then seen that even though they took a lot of money from this elderly chap using details hackers gained from Talk Talks site the company refuse to reimburse this man because the bank details they obtained where not the ones at talk talk, This left me annoyed, now sure the con men are a**holes for ripping off an old guy but Talk Talk are in my opinion just as responsible and should show some compassion, after all it was them that did not keep these details safe.

Its one of those situations where the company should reimburse him BUT they cant.

If they did that then more people will come at them saying such and such happened because of this hack now pay me.

It is hard to say really, if it happened to you personally, I guess you would see it more as their fault. But to simplify it. If a friend left his laptop at your house, and someone broke in and stole it. Would you feel responsible for his laptop being stolen. I know this is not the exact same situation, as Talk Talk do have a responsibility to keep your details secure. However we all know (well most of us) that complete safety from these kind of attack is virtually impossible.

Another thing is the information obtained was not leaked from the hack.

Yes you can say this would not have happened if Talk Talk didnt get hacked but it was not the direct cause.

You wont get any money from any company if they aren't directly the cause of your loss.

Yeah your both right but just could not help but to feel bad for the ol boy and if I was CEO I don't think I could see him go without, but that may be why I could never be CEO of massive company as I do have compassion and this is something they need removed to keep the company afloat. seen another story saying that Talk Talk could now have to go bust with compensation claims.

so the "sustained and technical" hack turns out to be a 15 year old kid with an sql inhection script.

personally I think any company that doesnt encrypt their data should be fined if they leak.
