Taking #1 and #2 in google. How do they do that? [Pic]

I noticed that a lot of popular websites often take both 1st and 2nd positions in Google's serps for a certain keyword. On the first position it's their main page and on the second its usually the most recent post. How do they do that? Is it because they are "trusted" by google or is there a way to make a site show up on both of those positions?

OP, when you get sitelinks you usually get the second listing as well - I think it's equivalent to an indented but it's formatted differently for sitelinks.

Apart from that, indented listings are an easy way to snatch more traffic, and then you can always rank another website just below yours (preferably with another indented) for maximum traffic suck.

It's great when you own ATF for almost all your keywords - with your own domains
Impossible in hyper competitive markets though without a big pair of swinging seo balls.
