I had a site sitting on page 2. I 301d 3 or 4 sites into it and it moved to page 1 position 4. It lasted 3 days and is now halfway down page 2. Ive tried shouting and swearing at the screen and headbutting the wall as well as throwing my keyboard about. Im still on page 2 though.
My question is,when I redirected the sites I left the outbound links on. They were going to other money sites.
Should I have removed them?

Well you missed staring at a random person making the weirdest face you can possibly think of. I believe that'll get back your lost rankings.

Edit : I re-read your question 3 times to grasp what you're trying to say. I guess your site is acting as a buffer and giving out power to those external links on your money site. You don't have to remove them. Try nofollowing all of them.

Lol well anythings worth a try at the moment!

lol. You can simply install and activate this plugin if your site runs on Wordpress.

Code:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/nofollow-for-external-link/

It'll automatically insert "rel=nofollow" tag to all the external links.

Once activated, regenerate your sitemap and submit it to GWMT(if you use) and ping all the urls.

Thats great. Was going to remove all links but thats a better solution.
Do you think the outbound links were affecting my site though?

Unless your site has some authority, your site may just act as a buffer and push the rankings for those external links. For ex Take wikipedia, It's getting link juice from all around the world but spreading link juice only to the internal links establishing a perfect site architecture. That's why it's ranking #1 for millions of keywords. Try nofollowing the external links and update how it goes. I'd also add more internal links from the homepage since it's what getting the link juice from all 4 domains.
