Tags on wordpress blog posts?

So, a question that I don't really find a clear answer. Do you guys use tags when posting an article on a wordpress website? Or they are useless? I mean you write the article all seo friendly, but adding tags with derivates from the main keyword will help rank on those keywords? For some reason Webmaster tools won't even index the tags pages....

I have no idea. I never use them.
 
tag pages do get indexed, but I've not seen them rank. I still use them, though as they can help people navigate bigger and / or lesser optimized sites easier. I don't think they provide any SEO value, though...
 
I don't think tags do anything for individual SEO, but for example if you have 'latest posts' widget somewhere you can select tags/categories to only show something specific. I use them for navigation and category.
 
I have stopped using them and are redirecting some. There was a good article on yoast about this.
 
I've found tag pages can rank. Not compared with how much times I have bloody used them though! :D

I like sometimes having a tag widget on the sidebar, so I need them for that. I don't worry about non indexing them or anything.
 
Tags always worked. They work today, they have been working since the beginning. I have no problem with indexing tags per-se, there are indexing issues with google all around, tags, posts, pages, they don’t index as they did.

1. they work as internal links: when adding a tag to a post with links, some of the SEO juice flows to the tag, and then spreads allthroughout the rest of the posts within the tag
2. if they have proper titles and descriptions are a great asset
3. they work as navigation, making posts within the same topic easier to find

I know they work, maybe they don’t really matter on smaller sites, for example, but I can tell you they have been a huge Evrika for me in the past months.

People don’t use then because they don’t think they need them, and they might be right. Or because they’re lazy. For me they work big time.

But what if you use the same tags for 2-3 posts/articles? They will still act like internal linking? Between all the posts or just the first one?

Well, not sure I understand your question. If you use tags, you use one tag for several posts. You may also have the same 2-3-4 tags for several posts. It has to make sense.

You don't interlink manually, they auto-interlink your content. You just sit back and wait for the results. Just need to add the appropriate tags for each of your posts.
 
Go to tech.co and move your mouse over where it says News. A dropdown will appear. That's a proper use of tags, in that case, for navigational purposes.
 
In most cases, i don't use them at all. But they can be useful for certain usecases of course. I just don't see it impacting SEO too much.
 
I don't use tags on my blogs as well. Too much time for such irrelevant feature.
 
Its something for big sites. It makes it easy for the User to follow a topic. Thats like a second category kind of

I use tag machine 2. Very good and I get lots of traffic to my tag pages.

Not sure I understand what you mean. Schema could be another subject of conversation entirely. The main thing here is that, for me, tags work.
 
I use them because my "related posts" plugins use the meta tags to search for related posts.
Not that sure if they are useless for SEO or not tho.
 
There is a right way to do tags which could be of some benefit. But tags could turn out to be bad if you use them in the wrong manner. People will find it difficult to navigate your website and there could be a negative effect on SEO as well if tags are used the wrong way.
