Switching to https worth it?

Looks like my sites host is allowing sites to switch to https with the click of a button and it redirects the pages. Any risk in ruining ranking from switching to https? Is it worth doing?

if its free, then Hell Yes!!

Google likes https more than http... and if you are selling stuff or storing user info etc, ppl also think https is safer
 
It's not going to be a big improvements, another factor is that https is slower than http...
In my experience this won't be a big improvement, neither for server resources ( extra costs ), and it's nothing close to seo
 
Meh.. if it's free then you may as well. It's supposed to have some sort of influence on your ranking but I have yet to see a huge improvement on the sites I've done it on.
 
Unless everything will https its not a good idea. The broken https lock in the brower looks really bad. You even have to make your images https and external JS code. Unless you dont mind the broken lock symbol warning peoples its not a pure https site.

That's weird, I didn't know https would do that. Also my site is hosted on an ecommerce platform but if it could make the site go slower I'll take that into consideration too.
 
Unless you are in a niche where sites that rank are expected to process sensitive information (logins, personal info), I don't think it'll do you any good.
 
I moved to https & got benefits in ranking.
But one need to follow proper procedure to move to https.
I can do proper https with HTML sites, WordPress sites. Done for some clients who said they got the benefit too.
If you don't move it properly, it will be broken & you will lose traffic & rankings.

I use SSL for https from Namecheap, they cost $9/year. But for 1st year I got it free when transferred domain during promotion for $4.16.

If you worry about speed, then move to SSD hosting. You will get a large improvement.

The newest version of https is even faster then http, but not all hosts support it yet. Cloud flare does though.
 
If you want to take advantage of BIG G ranking factors, the answer is YES.
 
If this is a self-signed SSL certificate (Which I am guessing is what they are offering), your visitors will get a warning message every time they visit your site.

However, if your host provides a SSL certificate from a legitimate provider - why not? The positive aspects that https offers outweighs http.
 
They are probably using lets encrypt to offer free SSL. Its a new CA that hands out trusted DV certificates for free and is fully automated.

I wonder what would happen if you enable it, but not redirect http to https.
 
I posted simmilar theard a few days ago, I dropped the rankings on all KW and as soon I removed the ssl I get back but far away from what it was before. Also 301 redirect will screw your link juice .
Also very important - free ssl does not count for google as sign. You need singed certificates about 100$ a year .
 
If you're selling products or doing anything with user data(credit card, personal information, etc) go for HTTPS always​.
 
As of this current moment you can go with http in the future probably it will be best to go with https.

I'm afraid of that possibly happening. Losing rankings for switching to https would be a setback.

I sell stuff but our checkout section is all secured and I think it might be https by my site host. I think I may make the jump, I'm a little worried of a ranking setback but I feel like going forward https may be better in the long run.

Paid SSL is $9/year from namecheap. You mustn't have moved from http to https properly.
One need to give special care when moving from http to https.
It's working great for my website I moved from http to https with paid SSL.
Got ranking on more keywords with better rankings on some. Earning has increased. But you have to give few days to weeks to get there.
