Swapped X-Box - how to tell?

My brother sent his xbox into a shop to get fixed and I think its been switched with another one, is there anyway to check the memory to find out? or any other way to tell?

Did he write down the serial number?

I don't think he did, is there any way he can find out if he phoned xbox and gave them the serial number on the one just now?
