As far as I know, they only will ask for documents if its an e-mail that from an institution where you don't have to be an active student in order to use the e-mail. I just signed up and got approved, however my university blocks my e-mail shortly after graduating.
The guys that shared all those easy to get .edu's from community colleges are the ones that caused companies to require proof of enrollment for certain .edu's. I had to send in a copy of my course schedule in order to get Amazon Prime Student.

nope. some college emails don't require verifying id.
