There is a lot of mixed info about supplements. Some say they are helpful, others say they can do more harm then good. Do you take supplements? If so, which one(s) and how has it helped?
I think they have a certain placebo effect. That doesn't mean they don't work. Placebo can work wonders as several scientific studies show.
Having said that, if you are working out you can get away with not taking any supplements at all. Clean diet, working out consistently, and realistic goal setting are more important than supplements. I would much rather save the money and buy whole food such as chicken breasts, prime beef cuts, exotic veggies (to keep my food clean and tasty).
If you are competing, however, then supplements are necessary to give you that edge. Whey protein, BCAA, and Creatine are pretty safe supplements and they are somewhat effective.
Hope this helps.
They definitely have a placebo effect and sometimes they motivate you to put in more effort in the gym. There is no debating the convenience of a good protein shake. You can gulp in 25 grams of protein after a tiring work out. So, it makes your life a lot easier if you have a target protein intake per day. Also, they are great for coping with sudden sugar cravings as whey shakes taste (especially ON products) better than most homemade milkshakes.
However, it's important to remember that they are supplements. That means they are by nature meant to supplement a great diet and an ass-busting workout plan.
