You've added two really imporant issues there.

Captcha solves and how if you are running 24/7 (which I do with Ultimate Demon) then a VPS that costs under $40 a month can actually end up SAVING you money. My desktop probably uses $40 a month in electricity if it's on 24/7 every day (which my VPS is) that's only about $1.30 a day or 6 cents an hour. Here in the UK, sonce 2008 - electricity to run my rig must cost about that much if not a little more. 580 watt PSU etc...
So just on energy alone I'm saving cash by having a VPS - and it comes with a much faster internet connection than my home set up (in at 14 megs a second out at about 3.5 megs a second)
