Problem: Leeches

Solution: Get rid of them

What's going on guys?

A recent share of mine shed some light on a potential issue that is going on: The amount of leeches we have going around.

I've had numerous and numerous of members with aged accounts, in one way or another, interact with me today asking for a password to one of my shares. These members were people that have had these accounts for years, some even more than 5 years old, and had an average of only 10 posts.

Basically these are people who do nothing for the community but come here to reap the benefits of having a membership to this community but in no way help or contribute.

They come here just to enjoy our downloads and nothing more.

We need to have this community on a "One hand washes the other" basis, NOT "Hey, let me use you for all I can and give nothing in return."

With that said,
I want to suggest an "Account Inactivity Ban"

This can probably be automated.

Basically I believe there should be a criteria for members to be able to maintain active with their accounts.

There is NO reason why 5 year old accounts should have only 10 posts.

I'm not saying people need to live, eat, and breath BHW, but they should at least participate in the community.

I think maybe a fair criteria would be to set a post count minimum of 50 posts a year.

I'll set up a poll, but what we will have to consider is the quality of members who vote. NOT just the number, reason being is because obviously these leechers don't want to have a minimum post requirement.

This suggestion could be twisted in other ways as well. I just feel that we need a nice little sweep every once in a while to keep the bugs out.

Heh, maybe I'm just being a little protective of this place. I tend to do that when I care about things.

I know overall your intentions with this idea and what your thinking. However let's look at it from a different angle.
They are not leeching as much as you think. I believe I have replied to another thread similar to this one. The little bit of bandwidth
these guys take up is well worth their impressions on advertisement banners and really helps people who advertise get conversions.

From a media buying perspective these guys are not leechers. Who knows how many of these "Guest" and people who never
even post actually buy from the BST and other Banner ad placement in our community.

They are contributing in their own way and they probably are not even aware of this. :)

Cheers,
Unclemike

Actually, after rereading it your problem comes down to this:
Basically these are people who do nothing for the community but come here to reap the benefits of having a membership to this community but in no way help or contribute.
They come here just to enjoy our downloads and nothing more.
We need to have this community on a "One hand washes the other" basis, NOT "Hey, let me use you for all I can and give nothing in return."

Like srb888 suggested they are not part of our community. How exactly are they hurting us?
They get a free download, yes. So what? Did you ever use pirated software? As long as they are not being a nuisance, who cares? They still log on, they make some people money even.

Perhaps I will be next with my sucky avatar, banned and sent to oblivion for not complying to the Avatar Code. lolz.:P

Respectfully,

People that speak up should not only be people of higher authority. If that were the case, the world would be all but a bunch of nobodies. Someones lesser authority should not stop them, in anyway, from speaking up and bringing peoples attention to something. That is how leaders, entrepreneurs, and successors are created.

The argument is as such, there are people that have had accounts for several years and have acquired a total post count of 10. If they are still logging in, failing to contribute anything positive to the community, and are hanging around the downloads section, the means they are just leeching. It speaks for itself.

I changed the idea from a ban to a limited account instead. Figured this would alleviate much of all the concerns. Even the ad concerns.

Although you are right in that this is an internet forum, but not in that it is NOT a home to me and many many other respected members.

Cheers

Well, BHW has almost over half a million (+200 more "active members" for a simple arithmetic later on) members... Almost half a million haven't posted over a long period of time... So we should only keep the 200 or so members and ask the rest to please (I hope there is a need for the word "please" here :)) drop outside forever????

What about the outsiders who've never joined? Should they be sent into an infinite loop and disable their Ctrl+Alt+Delete buttons, as well as somehow burn out their mains switch or the monitor if they try to "invade" the download section? (j/k) :)

I think that many top-level members are among those who are inactive at the moment, so ***horror*** who is going to tell them the marching orders!!??!!??

Better we move ahead all together and keep the forums' sanity intact on this (non)issue!

P.S.:
I changed the idea from a ban to a limited account instead.

Hopefully, you'll change it to "It's OK to have them all, they are all Welcome here!" soon, ... before it's too late. :)

Hopefully, some other member wouldn't ask for banning members who have a low "Thanks" count! lol. Community is all about being thankful, isn't it? All the outsiders, send (somehow) a email of thanks to the contributing member if you download or read anything... ;)

j/k

The only real solution to the leeching problem is to be totally selfish and not share anything. But where would the community be?

Sharing by definition is exchanging thoughts and ideas freely without expecting something in return.

Leecher can be a term given to everyone that use the internet. ie when downloading free music, videos, and games or simply reading an informative article. If something useful is given out for free then it is natural that everyone no matter who they are will want a piece of the action.

Snort you should focus more of your time on the type of member you are, and take note of the appreciation given by the true heart of the BHW community with all the thanks and reps given for the valuable shares you have given.

Too harsh. Just redirect them to meatspin.

@Snort:

So you've found a "Final Solution" for your so-called leeches, have you not?

You're suggesting that we setup some kind of BHW Gestapo/KGB that snoops on citizens 24/7 and liquidates those that don't meet your subjective criteria of being a good citizen.

Thank the heavens you're not in government!

I agree with Wiz - you don't ban anyone as long as they follow the rules and don't cause trouble. The community should be open to those that contribute as well as those that seek only to learn/benefit from the largess of those that share.

Sharing should be selfless. If you don't like the idea of non-contributors "leeching" your shares, then please don't share anything. There are plenty of generous people here who will more than make up for you.

I think this community is being administered and run admirably well. Let's keep it that way.

I know quite a bunch of so called inactive members and their knowledges would outbeat any of the share ever been. BHW remains a place where you can meet them and learn from them even if it remains in private.

Some of them, may post 1 single thread in whole 10 years time and will bring much more than 1 thousands giveaways.

So instead of complaining about leechers, why not set a requirements to do your giveaways like the following :

Must Have X post , X REP, X thanks to benefit from X share.

That's a good filter that protect you from "leechers"

Or get yourself the VIP status, and share in the dedicated forum, that's another work around.

In others words : Let it Be.

@sn0rt
Here's another point that I missed:
Can you imagine how many people will be banned if this rule comes alive? People will be just pissed of, because they lose their account for no reason basically (and this is to remind you that you can't have multiple accounts here). I don't think it will be a good thing for BHW's image....

Food for thought:
Would you ban Harro because he is not posting here anymore? He is a gem!!

also take into consideration there is a % of so called readers / leechers
that do eventually join the forum. so what if they can see free parts of the
forum, it shows the forum is popular. having ran a forum of 60k members
for 6 yrs and modded a forum of over 300k member yrs ago people coming here who
login or not still provide traffic rankings. so if it aint broke ......

So basically let's make people post useless crap to retain their account?

users with posts i dont agree with a ban, but the old ones with 0 posts and no activity those can be deleted

Im somehow in between regarding this matter snort. I also agree with you on that some of those inactive members are only here for the freebies but "Some" of those inactive members are successful ones. They might be too busy with their IM journeys or building new bots and they are too busy to post or read something and only comes once in a while if they have some spare time to read the latest trends in their field. It would be a tough job for the mods to categorize in which "inactivity" does an inactive member belong. :)

That's almost exactly what I was going to say

I come and go from various forums, depending on what I'm working on

I may be active here for months, then be gone for about a year, and be on a white hat forum somewhere

I'm also in the grey area with this, but I like these last two options. Maybe have just a buyer acct for those that only want the BST sections, or use your idea of 50 posts/year requirements for just the download area, and maybe include the freebies/giveaways section with that requirement. Seriously, I saw a thread that was horrendously spammed by people with old, zero post accts that were abusing the service a member was kindly providing. It's not the first time I've ever seen that, but it's that kind of abuse that cause OPs to give up on their services here. If we can at least limit (or even better, eliminate) that kind of annoyance, it'll be an improvement. Just my opinion.

~MidKnight

whats stopping a buyer turning into a forum user tho ?
this thread is pure BS,users that leach add figures to the daily visitors, they might click the advertisements , they could even be clicking on peoples signature.

yeah im a leach , i browse the forum using everyone elses ideas without sharing my own , you know why ? cos i cant get my ideas to work so what would be the point of sharing them?
i never have anything worth sharing, believe me if i did i would, so think about other users in the same mindset as me
this post has actually frustrated me soo much

and besides the best posts are kept hidden from the frontpage and even OP wouldnt be able to see them as hes not a donor or JRVIP ( neither am i i know )

and OP your willing to give to users that give something back in return? so its not really a selfless act now is it

OP,
I mentioned in the other thread, and used the words slightly arrogant etc....
I would like to add that YOU regard your share as being TOO precious. Honestly.
Please kindly get over yourself. I have stated in the other thread that this would be a preferred course of action for you.

We all need a balance in this community.

besides the actual posting of a share, do you realise the more valuable aspect of any particular share? do you?
it is the comments from other members of BHW about how well a particular share has/has not worked for them,
and this guides ALL MEMBERS towards a more profitable and efficient use of the share.

take time to read the valuable comments on some of the longer download threads and you will see what I mean.

anyhow I could type for ages disputing this poll and this thread, but I will decide to retire gracefully from this thread,
because I, as I am sure many others feel the although the sentiments which you have highlighted are indeed valid,
this argument has become somewhat diluted as a result.... so in the words of the famous dragons, "I am out". :)

(i trust that this post has had sufficient characters to deem it useful ;) and reach your abstract quota)
yet i am not trying to inflate a post count, because it is not even counted as a post in BHW lounge, so there....

I am just tired reading this thread.....
<<please note that no keyboards were harmed in the production of this post :)>>
