Defiantly a caching plugin, W3 total cache is the best, as you can further add a CDN on when your ready. But a good host always helps too.

• W3 Total Cache - Caches website
• WP Smush.it - Smushes images and makes them smaller by taking out unneeded bits

Thats about it. A CDN, and good webhost are key though.
