Hey guys,

I’ve had a site that’s been running pretty smoothly for a while, so honestly I didn’t pay much attention to indexing issues before. Recently I checked and noticed the number of indexed pages has dropped a lot compared to before.

Did something change in Google’s rules or updates since June that could explain this?

Find out the de indexed pages. Make some improvements like headings, content, internal links and external links. And then request indexing in GSC. If these doesn't work then share the url in some social media platfrom like x, pinterest, facebook, instagram. See the results and don't forget to update us with the result you get.

This often happens for no reason. So, no need to worry unless they suspected something. You can try resubmitting your sitemap, manually submitting some URLs for index, and fixing any errors you know of. If nothing works, then you should identify the root cause and fix it.

Google has tightened indexing with quality and crawl budget updates, so only strong, unique, and regularly updated pages tend to stay indexed.

Thanks for the tips! But my site is a WooCommerce store. The pages that aren’t indexed are almost all individual product pages. For this kind of page, is it still possible to optimize the way you mentioned (headings, content, links, etc.)? Since these pages don’t have much content, I’m not sure what else I could improve.

Thank you and I read somewhere that I need to update the site with some meaningful updates before resubmitting the sitemap, otherwise it won’t help. Is that actually true, or can I just resubmit without changing?

That makes sense. But most of my site is just product pages, so I’m not really sure how to improve the “content quality” there.

As I know, these might be issues:
* You said your individual product page got no index, this happens accidentally and can be fixed through or set via SEO Plugins like: Yoast/Rank Math or any other you know.
* Crawl Budget Issues are common. If you have thousands of products, Google may ignore low value products or pages.
* If product pages aren’t linked from category pages.
* Sometimes, slow page speed might cause indexing issues.

I have a client who faced the same issue, and what we found to know is that not every product needs to be indexed. SEO should focus on quality over quantity.

In layman's words, if you publish gibberish or AI generated content, then fix it before resubmitting your sitemap. If your site is already great, then there is no need to worry.

If there is nothing to fix, then don't break it.

Got it, thanks for the insights. In my case the number of index used to be totally normal, but then suddenly dropped by a few thousand. Would you say that’s more of an accidental thing rather than an issue with the site itself?

Thanks for the tip! I’ll give it a try and see how things go.

Check your search console data and look for any technical SEO issues that might be causing deindexing. Also, Google rolled out the August 2025 Spam Update, so it’s worth monitoring your site’s performance over the next few weeks to see if things stabilize.

If it is a Wordpress site, use a tool like this https://de.wordpress.org/plugins/gpt3-ai-content-generator/ to generate short and full product descriptions as well as meta tags. Works like a charm. I got 30K product pages indexed on an awin affiliate site with 45K products.

Have you tried any methods to fix that issue?

Google tightened indexing since late May to June. Thin value pages hit most. Fix by improve quality and merge weak content. Reindex after cleanup, recovery takes time.

If pages don’t bring unique value or look too thin/duplicative Google just stops indexing them. Also the Helpful Content system updates in late 2024/early 2025 tightened things further. It doesn’t always mean a penalty it’s often just Google trimming low prio pages.

Could be update related. But most likely there's been some issue during crawling or your crawl budget. Check google search console for messages under the indexing and problems sections.

It happens, what you need to do is post more quality content, you will start getting results as far as Google have indexed the site before.

Yep, Google’s been stricter since June. Low-value or duplicate pages are often filtered out focus on unique content + internal links to keep pages indexed.

Yes, Google has rolled out several updates since June that may affect indexing. They’ve been focusing more on content quality, site structure, and technical health. It’s a good idea to check for crawl errors, thin content, or any manual actions in Search Console.
