Has anyone used Google's Disavow Tool and seen any noticeable difference? I'm contemplating using it for a client's website that has a ton of low-quality, de-indexed links pointing to it. Just wanted to get some feedback from others who have used it.

    Cheers!

A vacuum cleaner will only help you to suck the dirt and keep the home tidy but you've to put some high PR decorative pillows, do follow lightings, high DA Art frames, contextual rugs, etc..., to make it look beautiful again. But vacuum cleaner will always work if you know how to use it. That's why it's invented after all. Hope it makes sense.

I used it and I really didn't have much success. I suppose it is better than nothing but your time may be better spent building links. It is really a horrible process that is so tedious and boring going through tens of thousands of links to not get much benefit. I recommend running the links through scrapebox and simply disavowing anything that doesn't meet a certain criteria (ie. less than pr2 and OBL greater than 20).

    Good luck!

Never had any success on my end. But also remember that when you disavow links you basically lose them, so don't expect to have the rankings come back to where they were. If your client has a ton of crap links they might just want to start from scratch. Recovering from Penguin seems to be very hit and miss.

it's google's way of crowdsourcing link spam detection. It's kind of their indirect admission that they can't clearly identify link spam...so they made a tool so you can tell them which links are spam! I wouldn't use it. Haven't heard of anyone seeing any results positive or negative after using the tool.

I get requests to remove links from a directory site I own all the time with the threat that if I don't do it, my site will be reported through the disavow tool. I don't even bother to reply anymore. If people want to tell Google my site is crap, I'd rather have that have to work for them for free. But the point made in this thread, that Google is using the disavow tool as spam detection is certainly implicit in the threats I get. The people sending the emails certainly understand this, there pitch is do the work for free or your site will be hurt by my reporting it.

And has the threat ever been (a) carried out? and (b) if so - affected your network? I'm genuinely interested to hear.

Not for every website, I used on my 3 websites which were spammed with low quality backlinks by a local seo. Best advice is to move to the new domain and start a fresh

I had a website that had a bunch of first place KWs. It was penguinated, dropped to 6-7th page for the good keywords. I disavowed and it move up to #16 where it has been stuck in stone since despite a multitude of link building efforts. So I guess it did help, but not a miracle cure...

I don't know. I assume so. At first when I got these requests to remove links, I would respond saying I had a $15 link removal fee. Only a couple of people took me up on my offer. Now I don't bother to reply so I assume that they do indeed use the disavow tool. To see what I mean about the implied threat, here is language that I cut and pasted from a request:

"Failure to remove the link would require me to file a "Disavow Links" report with Google. My concern is that if I submit your site, in this report to Google, they may "flag" you site as "Spammy" or otherwise not in compliance with their guidelines."

The disavow tool can backfire...it can either save you from a malicious campaign or incriminate you, depending on the link profile...

    Be careful with it.
