I'm trying to create a website that bills customers monthly for their subscription. I'm not sure where to start going about setting this up. What type of program/script should I be looking at to accept credit cards, and paypal.
Are there any free ways to go about this? Everything I've seen has a few monthly fees attached to it.

So what's the best (in your opinion) solution for e-commerce?

Look into Stripe.com . It's easy to get started [if you're a developer]. You can accept credit cards, but not paypal. The pricing is 2.9% + 30cents last time I checked. They specialize in recurring payments. There is no monthly or setup fee.

dont use paypal, dont use paypal, dont use paypal, dont use paypal, dont use paypal, dont use paypal, dont use paypal, dont use paypal, dont use paypal, dont use paypal, dont use paypal, dont use paypal, dont use paypal, dont use paypal, dont use paypal, dont use paypal, dont use paypal, dont use paypal.

got it!

Because of the hassle of returns? or easy way to cancel payment?

For the platform, you can use Wordpress and choose which membership fits in your requirements like Amember, wishlist member, wp-members. Depending on your need you can narrow your search.
Hope that helps!

If your using WordPress or Joomla there are a lot of subscription plugins available.

Im sorry could you elaborate? Maybe a screenshot? And OP why not something like wp ecommerce or skrill?

If you are using wordpress then search for wp membeship on the add on search button.

A little expensive option, but one that will reduce headaches is going with kajabi.
I know some people here might have something negative to say about it, but I like it a lot.
A really good option if you believe you are going to have over 100 active members.
We just have webinars and post the webinar replays in kajabi.
There are also some ebook pdf's available for download there.

There are free methods, but I would just bite the bullet and get wishlist member.

It's relatively time consuming to setup, but it's the cadilack of membership sites imo

I say use s2 members plugin on wordpress. There is almost nothing it can't do. The free version is usually more than enough and the paid version is unbelievable for the price.

NO I am not affiliated, it just really is a great product and there are video tutorials that walk you everything. You are not just limited to paypal either. If you want to use your own merchant account I think you may have to get the paid version but if you have a merchant account the price of pro is a drop in the bucket.
