Are backlinks from subdomains really useful? These are not links from Web2.0s but from legit sites which have a 40+ DR. Been hearing a few people say that subdomains are treated as separate sites and hence if the subdomain in itself doesn’t have a lot of link juice passing to it, links from them are useless.

It really depends on the particular subdomain you're getting a link from,
Some subdomains do rank better than the main domain, take as example of blog built-in subdomain and root domain as landing page,
Some websites uses subdomains for the URL structure and the link will be just like a subfolder/post link,
On the other hand, a link from a standalone subdomain (with no internal links) will carry much less link juice and would be treated most likely just like a brand new domain

Many magazines sell article spaces on their subdomains that are also Nofollow.

Always make sure that the backlinks are follow.
