Subdomains vs Domains

Hi,
Im working on a website that is about to intergreate with its sister company. The site is international and they are pondering over the benefits of having each countrys site seperated by subdomains e.g. uk.xxxx.com, us.xxxx.com or to get domains for each site e.g. www.xxxx.co.uk, www.xxx.com. Some of these sies will also be a different language. What affect would this have on the SEO and which would you recommend??

Usually its best practice when geo targeting to use a different domain for each location.

Even more so if you are trying to get multiple page one listings for a term.. I remember Matt Cutts suggesting that in most cases their algorithms ensure that no more than 2 results appear on the SERPs from the same domain or subdomain.
 
I would go with two diff sites hosting the .com in USA because it will help google give weight on the . com for american search.

If i was going to use the same site, i would use folders not sub domains, folders always look the best.
 
either method works

depends on competition and what you do with those pages

Yes even though it's quite awhile after this original post, I'm having the same questions re: using subdomains vs. separate URLs for helping rank a business with a few different services? Doesn't seem like the linked sub-domain approach is a very popular idea here on BHW, but let me know any thoughts about this THANK YOU
 
Separate domains will give you more flexibility in the future and the ability to rank for the same keyword more than once for the same keyword.
The downside is managing multiple domains can be slightly more complicated.
 
If it's your company website, but does not care about SEO, then there shouldn't be any concerns in that matter - uk.company.com or company.co.uk , both will work as the company website. But if SEO is a concern, then you should definitely get .co.uk, as those would work marvelously well for local SEO - you'd get local preference when it comes to local SERP listings.
