Could creating an additional subdomain (eshop.companyname.com) for the same domain (companyname.com) affect rankings due to keyword cannibalization if I decide to create identical product pages?

The existing page is already indexable and ranks at position number 2.

I think so. And this is weird, because google treats subdomains as different sites so you'd assume that they're going to rank both pages, but I have a feeling that this is one of those cases where they analyze content across all subdomains of a domain, precisely because they know that this can be easily manipulated.

So yeah, it might not work...

Have you ever tried this technique yourself?

May be, it would lead to keyword cannibalization as there will be identical product pages and it could confuse search engines and hurt your rankings. So just stick to one page for each type of content.

you mean clone the content of my site and put it on sub-domain??
Not to clone the content. I will make it unique, including metadata and etc., to avoid any issues with duplicate content.

I would like to do a test and check the process. My client, without prior notice, added shop.domain.com to the domain's root and and ask if I could help him to rank by the same keywords with a subdomain.

They already have another subdomain that ranks in the SERP alongside the main domain (2nd position) and the subdomain (8th position) for the same main kw. Both pages getting organic traffic.

huh, so I was wrong in my initial assumption... To be honest, I never tried it, I've usually been a fair player and almost never thought outside of the box :p

Well, you've just answered your question then :)

For 99% of cases, google limits the results for only 2 pages per domain, so that won't simply work for you,
I would work on improving the current rankings, if you get the 1st positions for your first url(s) (domain) & 5-2 position for the subdomain, you'll get much better traffic,
If you want to get more of this traffic, it's better to use a different domain instead, you don't want to mess up your current rankings especially

identical product pages will never be a problem if the subdomain will details explain a single product , like your home page main domain has a product an you will use a subdomain as landing pages then it will improve your seo ranking

If you have a subdomain that has the same product pages as your main domain, you are essentially creating duplicate content that confuses search engines and harms your site's organic performance.

From my point of view, if you create a subdomain of any domain, it will be treated as a seperate website... And if you use unique content on both the subdomain and the main domain it will be treated separately and both will be ranked separately. From my point of view, it will not create a keyword cannibalization issue..

This two results lie will never end....
A big google lie.

Type in bloomberg it pops off multiple times and dominate first page with their multiple categories.

Type in hubspot blogs, all their multiple domains and subdomains popping off in google....

pretty common to get the same domain while search a brand domain, or a combination including the brand name,
you can try it with any well known brand, check "blackhatworld seo", "blackhatworld proxies", etc...

less likely the case for any keywords with decent competition & many pages/websites with decent authorities competing for it,
that's why it's mostly happening with easier less known keywords with less unoptimized/authority pages targetting it,

now, the algo is not that accurate & it can't be, so you might get confused in many cases

Yes ok I agree with your more accurate answer, now I understand it better. Is it not the logic behind your bsuiness name to "brand" it? So that people types in the brand name in google ?
Like Trump, Neil Patel news or blog, bloomberg news, Marie Forleo blogs, Hubspot blogs.......
Then the other type of users who type in keywords /phrases without the brand name

Then it would be better have a more specific branding name phrase like (my name markus); Marks Magazine or something, so when want to read news from me so you must type in google; Marks Magazine, not Mark or Magazine.
Or a brand name like (example fantasy name) : squabble news or squabble blogs or Hubspot blogs...to see their news content.

With that type of search phrase then your bran dname + all your subdomains + categories you have will pop up over the google page. Or when you are clever enough, use the Perez Hilton branding name model........people type in Paris Hilton but Perez Hilton pops up in the serps too !

For my name Markus (Mark) it's tricky because the movie actor mark Wahlberg us eoften the name/or trademark "Mark".
I am very careful with this so as not to get expensive claims from his lawyers.

Is this the new BHW design ? It's nice !

well, you have to use a unique, easy to remember & short brand name,
i'm glad you like the theme ^^

Yes my name; first name first letter, middle name first letter and lastname = 8 letters has the old ancient numerology= 9 ( ruled by mars) :)

My lastname is five letters short ,com is taken + net extension , taken by tucows Inc.

But when I type in my last name in google then it shows mostly germany search results I not want that.
