Just wondering how Google would view these three URL's:

subdomain.maindomain.com/mykeyword

and

maindomain.com/mykeyword

and

maindomain.com/subfolder/mykeyword

????

If you have at least two of these urls:

Are these separate entities or will google penalize even if there is different but related content on all pages?

Yes they are all separate individual URLs in the eyes of Groog. As long as the content is not the exact same, they should all be seen individually.

However, Groog may only list one page from your site that is related to that keyword. The one it feels as the most relevant. All 3 could be listed as well. You just never know until you do it.

What are you trying to achieve?

Are you trying to have 3 pages on your site dedicated to one keyword?

actually I have a website already that ranks for those keywords but I dont like the conversion rate even after playing around with the content over and over again. Since the domain is an "authority" domain I either wanted to install wordpress on a subdomain or in a subfolder and try and rank for the same keywords to see if a completely new website would convert better.
