I have a client and I am ranking him for different locations in his area. For example, if he were a personal injury lawyer and i was targeting the following: (these are examples, not what we are actually trying to rank for)

personal injury lawyer new york
personal injury lawyer texas
personal injury lawyer los angeles

If his domain were JohnDoe.com would we do

newyork.johndoe.com
or
johndoe.com/personal-injury-lawyer-new-york

It seems obvious to me that the folder is a better idea but I would like other perspectives!

Thank you.

If it were me personally, I'd put it in a subdomain due to the slightly more professional look. If I saw the website address to a site within a folder, I'd wonder how many more folders with companies you have. Subdomains feel a bit more personal, to me anyway.

Up to you man. There aren't really any benefits over either. I've a low post count so I understand if my view is invalid lol!

Hey your post count has nothing to do with it! Welcome to BHW :).

I appreciate the input and I agree that the subdomain may look for professional however for URL keyword targeting I am still set on the folder over subdomain unless somebody changes my mind :).
