ahrefs is a good tool but not more. Not matter what MOZ and AHREFS terlling you about SEO, only the google metrics / rules count !
But I think (Hubspot is doing this) you have a main webasite wieth 4 categories right....use them as subdomains (multisite)
like this example;
main site jsmith.com (affiliate marketing)
the 4 (categories) subdomains are:
affiliatenews /news
affiliatetools
courses
url structure will be like this; courses.jsmith.com
In the main domain you link from the navigation to your subdomains and from your content hub to each subdomain
The subdomain sites here you do blogging, have a category page with description, etrc,etc and interlinking all blog posts back to categories /home page.
Then from each subdomain site linking back to your main site on a separate content hub site + footer
Voila! you have well intern linked your main site with your subdomain sites- doing it this way is not bad for SEO never was.
Both sites will rank and when people type in google your brand name, then main domain and your multiple subdomains will pop up in google (multiple listings). All these links count for SEO !
Another benefit of subdomains; each subdomain site has it's own admin login and database! Each subdomain site has it's own sitemap with the standard index limit of 10.000 urls (!) With this structure you are expand your webhost ressources without any additional costs.
On medium or wordpress com with this url not; jsmith.wordpress com ! You can have a multisite on medium or wordpress com and you are not allowed to interlink them (correct me if I'm wrong here)
Within time when you rank with your sites, intend brand search, google will listing your multiple subdomains or when you have subfolder structure, all your subfolder urls/ categories, both are equally now in google's eye.
Build silo structure+ content hub on main site and the subdomain site= your web presence will be a powerful SEO army !
Happy sunday !
