excuse my ignorance

but if am going to work on SEO, should I promote individual pages on my website or on the website home page

which is more efficient, which is better int terms of SEO

You need the variety. When your website naturally links, people will be posting links to all pages but the majority on the homepage. Part of BH SEO is replicating that natural look.

First you will want to rank your main keyword using your home page and when you rank it then you will want to rank each of your pages for secondary or main keywords

Every time you get the chance to make a deeplink - do it!

I typically do a 4 to 1 ratio for my backlinks on my sites when I am building a new site.

For every 5 backllnks, I have 4 hit my inner pages and 1 hit my main page.

After the site starts to get some rankings, I very rarely target my main page.

I do very similar, as soon as people begin to post your link they will tend to link to your main page anyway so I move on to linking to the rest of my website.

As it has been said, variety is key. What big websites have only links to there homepage but none to the subpages? You need it all.
