Stuck on page 2 or 3

I write articles very similar to what the top 3 results are on the SERPs but I'm always on page 2 or 3. What are some things I'm missing? What can I do?

This is about trust.

Trust = confidence of search engines that they can serve your website and satisfy the user

Lack of confidence usually means that your website is not seen a an expert on the topic. Or you don't have enough votes (backlinks) to support your expert status.

didn't want to hijack @tiiberius' discussion as he knows better than me, that's why I waited nearly 15 hours to reply to this

But from experience I know that google trusts big dogs. That is: authority sites, so if you manage to become an authority in your niche you'll gain google's trust. How can you become an authority? Well, there are a few ways...

1) have a lot of traffic (sites like reddit are trusted by google because they're very community oriented, so they get a lot of traffic and engagement, so google trusts these sites blindfolded)

2) have a lot of authority (authority in this case means real DR / DA, which translates into backlinks. Backlinks are still one of the most important ranking factors in google and if you have lots of good links you're going to win google's trust and rank)

3) be a big gun in your niche (that is: own the results via authority and tropical authority which - besides backlinks - means having a lot of indexed pages and ranking for a ton of keywords, all of these pages and keywords being very targeted around a certain topic. And if you also have niche-relevant backlinks they will also contribute to the topical authority of your site, and these will lead to lots of indexed pages and lots of ranked keywords, which will lead to lots of traffic which will lead to lots of topical authority, therefore people will see you as a big player in your niche, which will make google notice and give you rankings even when you don't deserve them. Of course, to achieve this you're going to need great content and decently good niche-relevant backlinks so you can index and rank as much content as possible...)

Have you other factors page speed, optimisation and etc

Like in any niche, authoritative content and backlinks.

Could be they have more powerful backlinks than you or they are doing better at interlinking within their own site to pass link juice along.
