First i fixed ON page SEO, i added lots of content on home page which increased the time spent by each user on home page, other then this i also built some high quality links. I think ON page seo plays a big role now a days.

That it does. Its not as easy as link blasting, but its important.

Update: I am sitting at #3 right now, it took over 2.5 months to get from #11 to #3 though, maybe because of high volume searches for those keywords...

Meh, there is no solid data that shows that this is true. Duane Forrester of Bing came right out a couple years ago and straight admitted that Bing doesn't weight these metrics in their algorithm, calling them "too fuzzy". Matt Cutts did the same. I ran test on almost 20 websites and I saw little to no affect on my website rankings, beside some slight shifts, which could easily be chalked up to typical fluctuations.

When sites are sitting on the fringe (in top 20), there are two reasons this is usually so. 1) Lack of website authority and 2) Your on page is not up to par. All there is to it. Depending on the competition of the niche, some minor changes and a few really high end relevant links to your site will do the trick.

*Edit...I see you already fixed these issue. On page is a huge factor anymore. Too many SEO's don't pay enough attention to it. See my article below. That's how I've been auditing my client's content lately.

According to Backlinko's study (based on analyzing a million search engine results), as of now the most important ranking factors (regardless of what Google flacks/gurus tell you) are:

1) backlinks (especially if from different referring domains)
2) the site's overall link authority (PR/PA/DA/TF etc)
3) topically relevant content
4) longer content (average Google first page result contains 1,890 words)
5) HTTPS
6) content with at least one image
7) title tag keyword optimization
8) fast loading site speed
9) exact match anchor text
10) low bounce rate

Guys i already fixed the issues and i am ranking at top already, so we can make this thread a case study thread now....

Here is what i did in short-

- Fixed ON page SEO, like added more content on home page so that users stay on home page for longer period of time... This way google notices that your content is really useful and is user friendly. I think this is a big factor now a days.

- Build links but not too many if its a white hat site, i only built high quality guest post links to get from #11 to #3 and some quality home page links from quality sites as well. I contact the webmasters who run the sites similar to mine and ask them to add my link in blog post, sidebar or footer.

- Third and most important factor is Patience, once you have fixed ON page and built high quality links, all you need to do is wait for few months and you will see slow but steady improvements...

That's pretty much it, short and simple strategy to get to top if you are stuck in top 20-30 ranks

If not mentioned, do a competitor analysis. than reverse engineer what their doing. if your like for like and your content is the best ( using some special tools) than you should be on the first. Good luck
