Struggle to find topic ideas & motivation writing for myself

I'm kind of stuck at the moment. I feel like I need someone to set me assignments because I just don't know where to begin writing content for my own portfolio.

I feel kind of stupid now I'm writing this but I wondered if anyone had any advice. If I am working for someone and have a set topic and know what's expected, I don't have any problem. But for myself I'm finding it really hard to get to work and write.

When I have ideas I have a lot but then I don't know where to start. It's really getting to me. If you're a writer who writes content for yourself, how have you overcome this type of issue?

offer free demo writing for other people. take inspiration off what you've written previously in future work.

I know exactly how you feel. I tried writing random shit to make a portfolio but lost all motivation when I opened google docs to type. Writing for yourself can feel a little useless.

So I hosted a few giveaways here on bhw to overcome that feeling of uselessness. I suggest you do the same. Go in the freebies/giveaway section and post a thread for a giveaway. Start small, I started by writing a couple of 500 word articles in each giveaway.

And be sure to ask the mods to close the thread when all the spots are taken as people don't stop spamming 'interested'.

Sorry for my late reply, that's a great idea actually. I could offer to do a few free articles for people in exchange for a review or testimonial, if that's allowed. I am on my way to having enough posts to get a membership for the site so soon I should be able to do that. Thanks for your help.

Sorry again for the late response, I've been in hospital. I'm back here now though so I'll go through the resources you've shared. Thanks for that. Looking at topics on places like Reddit and Facebook is a good idea too. I think I am probably complicating it too much and expecting myself to write really in depth articles when I could just begin by focusing on answering one question, or solving one problem for readers.

YES!

It´s far better to write 20 articles that cover 20 topics in-depth rather than writing one full "ultimate" or "definitive" guide that covers all 20 of them.

Of course, you can also build those "ultimate" or "definitive" guides but limit the depth into which you´re developing those topics so you can write supporting articles around them.

This way you´re building topical relevance and positioning yourself as an authority within your niche.

You should start a blog so that you remain commited to write for it daily.

Have you got clients or not ? If you have regular clients, they will give you tasks daily. So you will remain motivated.

Thats not necessarily true. In fact, sometimes clients can demotivate you. What the OP is looking for is a muse of sorts.
