Stripe Baffles Me

Right,

I’m scaling up a Free + Shipping offer to around $1,000 per day.

The issue is that 20-30% of my Stripe payments fail.

The reason is “Insufficient funds” … but this is likely not the case.

The product price ranges from $8 to $30.

And Stripe is telling me these people don’t have $8 in their bank account?

I don’t think so.

Has anyone else experienced this, and what was your solution?

I’m open to other Payment processors if need be.

Currently dropshipping with 10 day delivery time, but will move to warehousing in a month or so.

Yes, insufficient funds is a good reason. And some people don't have $8.

Yes I’m aware of that.

I’m just concerned as to why the banks are reporting insufficient funds so frequently.

It seems absurd to me that some people don’t have $8 in their account.

It makes me think it’s an actual issue with the copy on my page, but I’m not sure how the banks would detect that.
 
Maybe your "free product" targeting matches broke people. Maybe that's what the pixel learned.

I just checked and there is no pattern.

Failed payments from customers all over the U.S

CVC check always succeeds, and it is not blocked on Stripe's end - according to support.

I can't imagine banks would pass back the "Insufficient Funds" error, for anything other than a lack of funds lol.

So maybe it really is that some customers cannot afford $8.

But it sucks cos today I missed out on $500 of revenue from these failed payments.
 
Nothing uncommon. Many people try to buy services with prepaid credit cards that are not charged.

i am sure there is lots of folks who don't even have 8usd in their bank accounts. but it sounds weird because someone who doesn't even have that normally wouldn't complete an offer in the first place (i assume they know of the 8 bucks shipping). maybe you could get 20 friends who do have the money to complete the offer (or pay 20 bucks to freelancers to do it) and see if any of them get rejected?
 
Well, if you are doing FREE + shipping thing, you are not really attracting folk with money, i think its expected
 
The real question is how are you able to do Free + Shipping in 2022. If you're using FB ads there's no way you're making money unless you're either upselling a subscription or not delivering the product.

Upselling 5 or 6 products plus a subscription.

And conversion rate is 15% on the front end.
 
Im experiencing something similar but with cpa offers that pays depending on how much they can charge from the client.

I was surprised as well but I guess its not so uncommon, they either are broke af or try to use debit cards without funds.

On other hand, why would they tried to purchase your product then? Dunno about US but here in EU I always can easly check my balance and be aware of it before making purchases.

If its the subscription you are trying to pull from them, retry it in 1-2 weeks.
 
Also 10-20% of my orders have `do_not_honor' and "generic_decline" error codes, stripe support always says to get in touch with customers bank to find the reason. I asked some customers to to that and they never got back.

One time a customer emails me back saying his card is declined on my website and his card has enough funds. I suggested him to checkout with his credit card on paypal as a gust without having to log in or create and account with paypal and that transaction succeeded with paypal.

Anyone found a solution on how to solve this stripe errors?
